He grinned. ‘That I am to be a father in August. I could not keep it to myself!’ His smile dimmed at her sudden tension. ‘It just came out, Polly. I wanted to tell everybody.’
‘Well, you might have got the month right. It’s more likely to be June,’ she told him, but she smiled at the awareness that he had accepted the truth without the knowledge of when she had conceived.
‘So soon?’ he exclaimed.
Polly looked forgivably smug at his astonishment. The baby had been the eighth wonder of the world even before this; it had now added the ninth to its tally. ‘And you can go and change that teddy for a blue one,’ she tossed in for good measure. ‘I’m convinced that I’ll have a boy.’
‘I don’t care,’ Raschid confided with a reverent hand resting on the slight curve of her stomach. ‘A baby is a baby. A child—our child.’
‘What did your father say?’ she asked worriedly.
‘Initially little. He was overjoyed into unusual silence until I explained about Berah, and then he called me all kinds of a fool for accepting her word without question. I have no doubts that the whole palace knows by now—he was shouting at the top of his voice!’
Polly relaxed until another concern gripped her. ‘I suppose it won’t be good news for Asif and Chassa.’
He smoothed her furrowed brow with gentle fingertips, that heart-stopping smile of his strongly in evidence. ‘Asif was there, and he is jubilant. My father will no longer insist that Chassa and the children must live in Dharein. They will probably move to London or New York. It is what they have always wanted.’
Her last worry banished, she gave a euphoric little sigh. ‘I suppose I ought to admit that Ismeni took me to that staircase and I didn’t know where I was going.’
‘I had already worked that out for myself.’ Bright blue eyes skimmed her blushing face mockingly. ‘And after lunch you can put on that glorious outfit again and play the scene afresh. The perfect penance, don’t you think?’
