Quin chuckled at Kane’s silence. ‘You have nothing to fear. I don’t care what she is so long as she stays away from us. My unit doesn’t either.’
‘Then why did you interfere in the Islands?’
Quin shrugged and didn’t reply.
‘And don’t think we don’t intend to repay you for leaving her defenceless in that fucking cave.’
Quin waved a hand in dismissal. ‘It ended well, didn’t it?’
Kane’s eyes narrowed. ‘She’s gone. She and the others have travelled on ahead. I stayed to make sure Greygor is dead.’
Quin’s lip curled in contempt for their old Commander. ‘He was found guilty of betraying the Brothers’ secrets and hanged from a tree. The bastard’s dead all right. We let him wriggle around for a bit, then Mal put a bolt through his chest.’
‘Commander.’ A soldier came running up. ‘We found a girl high in yonder tower.’
‘And? Drag her out and put her with the other slaves and servants. ’
‘She’s sayin’ she can’t leave her room. She’s makin’ a fuss.’
A loud, feminine scream emanated from the tower followed by a man’s yell.
Quin swore as he dismounted. ‘This place is ours now. We’ll do as we please. Show us. She’ll soon understand who her new masters are.’
He gave Kane a mock salute. ‘Duty calls. I look forward to your retribution, old friend.’
