“Let me know if you need help with anything,” he offers, his genuine kindness making it even more challenging for me to keep my emotions at bay.
I attempt to bury my feelings deep within and concentrate on the work. But even as I force myself to focus on the presentation, my thoughts keep drifting back to Dixon.
A relationship with Dixon might damage my professional reputation, but the thought of never knowing what could have been weighs on my mind.
“Chloe, we did it! The presentation is ready!” Dixon exclaims.
“Great job.”
“Couldn't have done it without you,” he says, our eyes locking for a moment before I glance away.
“Teamwork!”
The sun sets as I stare at my computer screen. The numbers and charts from our presentation blur together, reflecting my scattered thoughts.
“Chloe!” Dixon calls from across the room. “You're still here? It's getting late.”
“Uh, yeah,” I reply, rubbing my temples. “Just trying to tie up some loose ends before the big meeting tomorrow.”
I fidget with the pen, my thoughts swirling like a whirlwind as I try to focus on the spreadsheet. In the past few weeks, ourplan to compensate the designers has been set into motion, and Dixon's heartfelt confession to the press garnered an outpouring of support. The company's reputation is on the mend.
“Hey, Chloe,” Dixon says, leaning against the doorframe of my office. I look up, and my heart skips a beat at the sight of his disheveled hair and endearing grin. “Got a minute?”
“Of course. What's up?”
Dixon walks over, perching on the edge of my desk and giving me one of those looks that make my insides melt – a mixture of vulnerability and hope. “I’ve been thinking. We've been through a lot together, and I feel like we've grown closer because of it.”
I nod, my pulse quickening as I sense where the conversation is going. “I feel the same way, Dixon. We make a great team.”
“Exactly,” he agrees, his smile broadening. “So, I was wondering if you'd like to grab dinner with me tonight. You know, outside of work.” He scratches the back of his head, bashful.
A rush of warmth floods my cheeks. It is foolish, perhaps, to mix business with pleasure, but my heart argues that sometimes, the most significant risks lead to the greatest rewards.
“Are you asking me on a date, Mr. Myers?” I tease, my eyes sparkling with amusement.
“Guilty as charged,” he chuckles, his own cheeks tinted a light shade of pink. “So, what do you say?”
My ambitious nature screams for caution, but the part of me that longs for happiness and connection urge me to leap into the unknown. As I gaze into Dixon's eyes, the answer is simple. The heart's desires outweigh logic and reason.
“Alright, let's give it a shot. Dinner sounds lovely.”
“Fantastic,” Dixon beams, his smile lighting up the room. “I’ll pick you up at seven?”
“Seven it is.”
As Dixon leaves my office, exhilaration fills my chest, chasing away my earlier doubts. We are venturing into uncharted territory, but there is something thrilling about exploring the unknown with someone who makes my heart race like no other.
“Here's to taking chances,” I murmur, raising an imaginary glass in toast before returning my attention to the spreadsheet, my mind already racing with possibilities for the evening ahead.
