“What was that?” she whispered, laughter bubbling inside her.
“If I had to guess, I’d say the warthogs,” he managed.
And then they both burst out laughing so hard, their heads tipping back as JJ’s romantic proposal was turned into a comedy-fest. He kept trying to finish what he was going to say, but laughter would snag him, and they’d start giggling all over again.
Honestly, they were like two dopey kids who couldn’t control themselves.
Finally, after much throat clearing and a few deep breaths, he managed to say, “Well, that was unexpected, but…” He dug into his pocket.
“No. That was perfect.” She fingered the buttons on his shirt, her belly still shaking with the remnants of her laughter.
He nodded, his gaze softening as he held up a diamond engagement ring. “Can I put this on you now?”
“Yes.” She could barely whisper the word as she held out her hand and watched him slide the ring onto her trembling finger. It was beautiful. It could have been a hunk of coal and it still would have been beautiful. Because it was a statement of love from JJ to her. A promise.
She beamed down at it before looking up at him. Resting her hand on his face, she could barely speak past her riotous emotions. “I love you.”
“Always and forever,” he whispered, pulling her into another kiss.
