My eyebrows snap together. “You don’t trust me?”

He lets out a heavy sigh. “I do. But I’m not ready to give up our benefits yet.”

“Interesting.”

“What is?” he asks.

I glance away from the screen, formulating a response. “That you cared enough to check in on me.”

“I do.”

“Or you were hit with a sting of jealousy.”

“That doesn’t sound like me,” he quips.

I roll my eyes dramatically, making sure he sees them.

“Well, I’m going to bed now that you’re safely in your room for the night,” he says.

I shake out my wet hair. “So thoughtful of you. Good night.”

It isn’t until we end our call that I realize that Mason had no real reason to FaceTime me, despite just making sure I wasn’t banging someone else. His sudden display of apparent jealousy both warms me and pisses me off at the same time—an all too familiar feeling between us.

Chapter Nineteen

Bailey

The three of us needed to report back to the airport around midmorning, but Jax and Everett had an earlier flight, which allowed me to avoid an awkward conversation about standing him up last night. He hasn’t texted me about it yet, probably to save his pride. Piper and Lina had assumed that I’d spent the night with Jax before I had the chance to tell them any different. Their assumptions make sense since Jax and I do have a history together and, at this point, they have no clue about what’s going on with Mason.

Waking up this morning, I was relieved with my decision not to have gone to Jax’s hotel room.

Lina, Piper, and I jump on the sky tram, headed to employee parking. After leaving the hotel this morning in Chicago, we had two delays on our way back to Phoenix, arriving in the evening instead of our scheduled time which was supposed to be around three in the afternoon. We’re all off for the next few days.

“Bye, loves! I’ll see you both on Saturday at Harry and Jess’s wedding!” Lina calls out before getting into her car.

Both Piper and I are parked next to each other.

“I can’t believe Jess is going to marry your brother. They’ve been together forever, but it’s still so crazy for me to think about it.”

“You’re telling me! He’s been in love with her for as long as I can remember, though.” I lean against my car door.

“I know,” she agrees.

“I’m glad none of us have dates; at least we can be each other’s dates for the night.” Piper rests her arm on the open door of her car.

“I think Avery is bringing someone, though. The dentist, right?” I tell her.

Piper’s eyes grow wide. “Oh yeah, but I thought she ended things with him?”

“I think they’re kind of on and off.”

She nods her head. “That’s right. She’s so much better than him.”

“She really is. She’ll figure it out eventually. I’ll see you on Saturday.” I blow her a kiss, then get in my car and drive off.

By the time I get back to my condo, it’s late. Luca has school in the morning, which means I won’t see him until I pick him up after school gets out. I wonder if Mason is home. Maybe I should surprise him to see if he’s alone like he did when he FaceTimed me while I was in Chicago.

See how he likes it.
