“Of course, of course.” Brielle picked up a bottle of Perrier and took a sip, not bothering to offer Harper a drink. “What can I do for you?”

Oh, you’ve done enough. Harper crossed her legs and looked Brielle straight in the eye. “Rusty—Mr.Jenkins—told me you contacted him about the Miles Road property and said it was back on the market.”

“It is,” she replied without a flicker of emotion.

“You do realize I could report you for poaching my client?”

Brielle threaded her fingers on both hands into a fist and rested it on her desk. “He’sstillyour client, correct?”

“Yes. But only because he’s a good guy who understands loyalty.”

One corner of Brielle’s lips lifted. She picked up her phone and tapped on the screen. “When would you like to see the property?”

“I’ll get to that in a minute.” Harper leaned forward. “I want to talk about Jack first.”

Brielle paused, her index finger hovering above the phone screen. “What about Jack?”

“He told me everything, Brielle. The poaching, the rumors, the lies.” Harper’s fingernails dug into her palms.

Brielle glanced away. “I don’t know what he’s talking about. I haven’t spoken to Jack since I moved back here.”

“You haven’t?”

“Not since I kicked him out a year ago.”

“Wait, I don’t understand.” Harper frowned. “Youkicked him out?”

“Yes.” Brielle put down her phone. “He’s a class A jerk. I’m better off without him in my life.”

“Then why did he tell me you were trying to kill my career?”

Brielle shrugged. “To get back at me? I don’t know. Besides, you’re doing well, aren’t you? You’ve always been a top seller, and I saw that you hit the million-dollar club last year.”

Harper was completely confused. Had Jack lied to her about Brielle? Or was Brielle lying to her now? She wasn’t sure what to believe.

Brielle picked up her phone again. “Do you still want to schedule a showing?”

“Yes,” she said, her eyes not leaving Brielle as she reached into her purse for her own phone. But Brielle was tapping on the phone as if Jack’s accusations meant nothing. And if they weren’t true, they didn’t.

Which meant Harper’s business was failing on its own, and Jack was trying to get revenge on Brielle for dumping him by making her look bad—although that seemed convoluted. But what did she know? She couldn’t wrap her mind around sabotaging someone else’s career or using an ex to get payback on another ex. This was making her head spin.

“What day?” Brielle said, still scrolling through her phone.

“The earlier the better.” She didn’t want Rusty to miss out on Miles Road a second time.

“How about this Sunday?”

“Perfect.” That was after the ALS gala. She’d be tired after working the gala all day Saturday, but working-while-tired was nothing new to her.

“You can drop by my office to get the key,” Brielle said. “My weekend secretary will be here to give it to you.”

Weekend secretary. Harper didn’t even have one secretary anymore. “Great. I’ll see her then.”

Brielle pushed away from her desk and stood. “There’s been a lot of interest in the property since it came back on the market,” she pointed out. “I’m glad we could fit your client into the schedule.” She smiled thinly. “It’s good to see you again, Harper.”

Harper eyed Brielle’s outstretched hand. Then she stood and gave it a quick shake.

Brielle gestured to her open office door. “I hope you don’t mind if I don’t see you out. I’ve got a full schedule for the rest of the day.”
