With my head swirling, I was glad when Abbey and Chloe messaged to see if I was up for a video call and unsurprisingly, having seen photos of wedding dress number two, they insisted on a full breakdown as to how it came about.

“This could only happen to you,” Abbey said, snorting.

“I haven’t laughed this much in ages,” Chloe said, clutching her tummy.

I shook my head, with a smile. “Glad to be of service.”

“So what are you going to do?” Abbey asked.

“I was hoping you could tell me.”

“I can’t believe you didn’t say thanks but no thanks,” Chloe said.

“Believe me, I wish I had.”

“Then you’ll be pleased to know that we’ve been talking and have come up with the perfect solution,” Abbey said.

“Have we,” Chloe said.

“I’m all ears,” I said, knowing them far too well to take them seriously.

“A themed wedding,” Abbey said, trying but failing to put on a serious face.

“Think about it,” Chloe said, giggling. “Ifeveryonedresses like an eighties throwback, you won’t stand out.”

“You could insist on row upon row of shoulder pads.”

“And lots of big hair.”

“Electric blue mascara.”

“And purple eyeshadow and frosted pink lipstick.”

The two of them began to properly laugh.

“I can just see you and Leo gliding across the floor to a bit of Spandau Ballet.”

“Oh no. The first dance has to be Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.”

I shook my head again. “You’re mad. The pair of you.”

“Says the woman who can’t turn down a wedding dress when she’s offered one. Or should I say two.”

“Mummy!” Ruby called out.

Chloe’s shoulders slumped. “Just when I was feeling normal instead of sick for a change.”

Abbey checked her watch. “I should get off too. The builders will be back from their lunch break soon.”

“How’re the renovations coming along?” I asked.

“Slower than I’d hoped.” Abbey’s eyes lit up. “But it’s not all doom and gloom.”

Chloe and I had seen that twinkle before. It meant she had a man in her sights.

“Mummy!” Ruby wailed again.

Chloe looked crestfallen. “Stop,” she said to Abbey and me. “Not another word. No way am I putting this phone down so you two can gossip about gorgeous builders without me.”
