“So there are two out there?”

“At least.”

I slump a little, which makes me sag against him. It feels like he’s holding me up, and I don’t like it.

No, that’s a lie. I like it very much. But I stiffen my spine anyway.

“Does this mean you aren’t under the demon’s spell?” I mutter.

“Would I be hiding in a broom closet if I were?”

The sarcasm in his tone makes me snippy. “I don’t know what you like to do with your free time, Diego.”

He sighs. “How do I know you’re not entranced?”

“Because I’m also hiding in a broom closet.”

“Touché.”

I tilt my ear toward the door and listen closely. “Do you think those things are gone?”

“No idea. But we shouldn’t take any chances.”

“Right.” Something presses against me and I suck in a breath. “Diego?”

“Hmm?”

“Get your hand off my butt.”

A long moment passes before he answers, sounding mildly embarrassed. “That’s not my hand.”

My face heats, and I’m suddenly glad for the dark. “Oh.”

“You have a great ass. Now keep still.”

He shifts behind me, and my heart rate kicks up. In alarm or arousal, I’m not sure. “Why, what are you doing back there?”

“Relax. I’m going to cast a light so we can see. Close your eyes.”

Normally I’d keep arguing with him, but I don’t want Diego to know my magical abilities aren’t what they used to be. So I close my eyes, blocking out even the little bit of light seeping around the edges of the door. Diego’s arms encircle me loosely. I know exactly what spell he’s doing. It’s simple, one of the first taught to children. I’m not sure I can even do it anymore, but I imagine Diego’s hands moving in the dark. When I open my eyes, a small yellow orb floats in the air just above my head, casting a faint, friendly light over us.

Taking care not to jostle the brooms whose home we’ve invaded, I turn so I can finally get a good look at Diego’s face.

And praise Luna, what a face it is. Strong nose, serious brows and a jaw that’s filled out since I last saw him. Yeah, my childhood rival is all grown up now, and sexy as Sol.

I clear my throat. “So, um, how did you end up in this closet?”

“Same as you, I expect. I was looking for my parents when one of the cameras started following me.”

“Your parents?”

“They texted me to meet them here.”

“We should assume they’re also ensorcelled, like mine.”

“I think that’s a safe bet.”

“So what do we do about it?”
