When he came back out, he was relieved she was still wearing that nightie. That was his present to unwrap and he was going to take his time doing it.
He handed her the wet washcloth and climbed in next to her. While she was taking care of business, he said, “Gotta thank you for my gift. Was a complete fuckin’ surprise. Best gift ever.”
“You never got anything cool for Christmas as a kid?”
“Nothin’ as hot as you. Always had some crazy fantasies and you’re one that came true.”
Her face softened as she rolled into his side, wrapped her arm around his waist and propped her chin on his chest. “That might be the best compliment I’ve ever received.”
“It’s true. And, believe me, I jerked off a lot as a kid.” Still did. But his Fleshlight was going to get a lot less use if Cassie stayed in his life.
Her face twisted. “Should I still take it as a compliment?”

But that grin quickly fell. “Gotta apologize, Cass.”
She turned surprised eyes up toward him. “For what?”
“Wanted my gift to you to be you free of your ex. Did my fuckin’ best, my best wasn’t good enough.”
“Judge—”
“Wanted to at least give you that. Failed you.”
She sighed again. “You didn’t fail me. You didn’t cause any of this. And, really, it’s not your responsibility to free me of this mess.”
“Wanted to do it for you. For your girl. Make it a good holiday.”
She traced his nipple, making it bead. “It was a great one. I’ve got a roof over my head. I have a healthy, happy daughter. And…”
“And?”
“I’ve got you.”
Damn. “Ain’t goin’ nowhere.” He combed his fingers through her hair. “Didn’t miss what you said. Just like the nightie, wasn’t expectin’ that.”
“To be honest, I wasn’t, either. It just… I just said what I felt… what I feel.”
She was the first woman who told him that and he believed her. His ex-wife said it often, but he never believed her. Not one time. Her actions had spoken louder than her words.
The same with Cassie. Even if she never said it, he felt it. And that right there was everything and made him want her even more. “Ain’t a hard woman to love, Cass.”
“Oh, another compliment!”
He smirked. “Ain’t bad to look at, either.”
“Mmm hmm.”
“Got a smart mouth sometimes, though. That’s a con.”
“A con for what?”
“For lettin’ you move in with me.”
“Letting me?” she squeaked.
“Yeah. ‘Cause now I’m gonna have to find a bigger place for all of us.”
“Judge… I’m not sure I’m ready for that. With Daisy…”
“Yeah, get that. We got time. Just wanna know you’re okay with the idea.”
She gave him a smile. Soft just like the way her eyes looked. “I’m okay with the idea.”

Her fingers shifted to mindlessly trace the tattoos on his chest. “When I’m ready.”
“Like soon.” He knew he was pushing but he wanted her to know how important she was to him. Daisy, too.
It took her a few moments before she said, “When you find a place.”
“Want you and your girl in my life.”
“Ain’t goin’ nowhere,” she echoed his earlier response.
“One of the best things I ever heard besides you lovin’ me.”
