I said, “Let me get this straight. You’re a vampire, but you’re not like the rest?”

She shook her head. “Most people would call me wild, rebellious, free-spirited… that sort of thing. I go my own way, but I don’t take pleasure in hurting people. Whatever you’ve been told about us, we don’thaveto kill when we feed.”

“But three bites… and you make more.”

The girl nodded. “Yes, but there are ways to avoid that. Bloodletting into a cup for example, or donated blood, or even animals.”

“So, what brings someone like you here to ask for help from someone like me?”

“My friend is missing. I’m really worried about him, and it’s not something the police can help with.”

“Okay. Who is this friend? What’s she look like? Name?”

“He. Jackson Dolan. He’s twenty-one, about your height, muscular, brown hair.”

“Mm... hmm…” I jotted down notes.

“And he’s a werewolf.”

I damn near dropped the pad. With a sigh, I set down the pen, picked up my scotch, and downed it all in one swig.

I was gonna need a refill.
