All I know is I've lost everything because of it. I no longer circulate in Hollywood or the LA party scene. I don't turn up on talk shows or reality shows or quiz shows. I don't even have an agent anymore. I don't do anything, aside from Paisley. I need something else.

I love my daughter, but it's not enough.

And yes, I know that makes me a terrible person for admitting it, even if I haven't said it out loud. It's no wonder no one will stick around long enough to get my number. They know I have nothing to offer them if I don't have my fame. They can tell I'm not worth it.

We really do need to sit down and hash this out. I can't be expected to hide inside for the next fifteen years. Jonathan Spencer Maxwell is going to eventually have to fess up to his missteps. Dammit, I hate when Angie's right.

But enough of the heavy stuff. I've got more important matters to address.

"No offense, but I hate being a brunette. It works for you, but not so much for me."

"I think you being a brunette is like me trying to be a blonde. We are what we are. No use in trying to change that."

We are what we are.

Angie's right about that. "Can you get me in with your person?"

"I'm on it." She sits up, pulling out her phone and furiously texting away. She holds up her phone then, snaps a picture, and then resumes typing.

"What?"

"I had to show Cristian how desperate the situation is. He says come right over."

If this can't bring me back, I don't know what will.

Chapter 12: Henderson

"T

ell me again."

I sigh, knowing I will not ever live this down. "I met up with the wrong person."

"Whoalsohappened to be in a girl band."

I nod, even though through the phone Grayson can't see me. The texting got too confusing, so he finally called.

I hate talking on the phone. If it can't be solved in a text, I don't want to deal with it.

"But you didn't know she was a legit star, so you played her like she was the D-list celeb that Tawny Shane was," Grayson continues. "And then you …"

"Took her to karaoke so I could see if she really could sing. For the record, that answer is yes." I don't mention the duet.

"And then you …"

"Went back to her place, where I proceeded to make sure she didn't injure herself in her extremely inebriated state."

"And then …"

"A true gentleman never kisses and tells. But let's just say, she was in no condition for anything I may have had in mind."

"A true gentleman indeed," Grayson says dryly. "She's lucky she ended up with you instead of whomever she was supposed to be meeting."

I hadn't considered that. Tabitha was rather foolish to let herself get out of control like that. I think of her behavior in the alley. "I don't know that she's the best judge sometimes."

"Well, hell, she seemed to like you, so we know she's not," Grayson ribs. Normally I'd think he was funny. Right now, not so much.

I've a sinking feeling that I let a massive opportunity slip through my fingers.
