Chapter 23: Callaghan
I’m relieved to seeher face on the phone screen, and even more so when she holds up the bag. “I’ll be back in about five minutes unless you want me to pick up something for breakfast.”
“I thought we’d order room service if that’s okay with you. Just come back.”
I sound like I’m begging again. What is it about this woman that has me chasing after her like a lovesick teen?
A minute later she’s back, and I’m stripping off my shirt so she can tape my shoulder. Her hands are cold on my skin, but I know it’s her mere touch that is setting my blood on fire.
Once she’s done with that, she opens up the bottle of ibuprofen and hands me two.
“Two? I need three.”
“You need to not kill your kidneys by cutting off all their blood flow.”
I swallow the two down with a large gulp of water. “What’s it with you and my kidneys anyway? And what do you want for breakfast?”
She takes the menu, flopping down across the bed on her stomach. “I’ll take the pancakes. What are you getting?”
“Egg white omelet.”
Hannah rolls onto her back and looks at me, still sitting on the floor next to the bed. “I should have guessed. Have to keep that physique somehow.”
“I bet your pancakes will taste better. Maybe I can have a taste of you instead.”
Hannah shimmies closer so I can kiss her. “Mmm, just like this, but you’re going to be maple-flavored,” I murmur. “Maybe we should ask for extra syrup.” I can feel her smile into my mouth, but before we can take it any further, my phone starts to chime.
Aggressively.
A quick glance reveals both Heaven and Justice are blowing up my phone. “Shit.” I scramble to my feet. “I forgot about ...” I read the texts. Holy crap. The entire timeline’s been moved up. They’re ready to bring me on board, complete with a photo shoot today.
No more interviews. No auditioning. No schmoozing. They want me.
I show her my phone and then Hannah’s on her feet too. She throws my shirt at me and starts rushing around the tiny hotel room. “You’ve got a deal to sign!”
We both pause at the absurdity of it. “How could you forget this was in the works?” Hannah pants.
I close the distance between us and bring my mouth to hers. I feel her body melt into mine. When we touch, it’s like nothing else exists. “Because you make it hard for me to think straight.” It’s the truth. I don’t even know the last time I let anything—let alone a woman—distract me from my career.
Maybe we should slow things down.
