I practically spit in his face, but the saliva settled at the back of my throat. “As long as I’m away from you, I’ll be the happiest girl on this planet.”

Flashing a saccharine smile, I stepped into my white boots and scanned my apartment for the last time. Everything felt out of place now that I knew the truth of Todd’s infidelity. All the happy memories in this place were tainted. All the late nights binging Big Mouth and drinking wine didn’t exist. Not in the way that I remembered those memories.

I shut the door without even looking at Todd, fully aware that I would be crying about him once I’d reached my destination. But where did I want to go? What the hell would I do now? My family practically shunned me out of their life the second I gave up my executive position to move to Nebraska with Todd. “You ruined the family name,”is what my mom said to me the last time we spoke.“How could you be so stupid? Think for once in your life, Marley”my dad followed suit. I guess I deserved it. I was an idiot. And this decision ruined my life.

I stepped into my 2016 Malibu and locked the door, inhaling the leftover scent of Todd’s cologne clutching to the passenger seat. Anger began to boil in my insides as I took out my perfume and sprayed it all over the lining, erasing any trace of Todd that remained in my car. Luckily I just bought it so he didn’t have any of his stupid shit anywhere, so that was a –

“Marley, wait!” I turned to see Todd running out of the apartment complex, waving his arms like a maniac.

And I pressed the gas. I pressed the gas like my life depended on it. Because at this point, that was all my life depended on.

Chapter Two

Hunter

“C’mon Hunt, done already?”

Josh slammed his hand on the wooden table, calling over the busty blonde who purposely chose our table to serve.

She was a sweet girl, Addison I think her name was. I’d seen her around a lot at this bar, probably cause she works here dumb ass.

Fucking shit, lots of lights. Tons.

I blinked away from the manic commotion in the middle of the dance floor and attempted to zero in on Addison; black long sleeve, tight as a condom. Her tits jumpin’ about, and about, and about.

“Another round, boys?” She winked, pursing her lips at me.

“You already know, baby.” Josh wrapped a flimsy arm around my shoulder, pinching my collarbone. “Hunt, Coors or Bud?”

“Uh…”Man, I need some goddamn water. “Can I get a cup of ice, Addison?”

I think she frowned at me. I don’t know. Too many fuckin’ lights.

“It’s Britt, Hunter. But of course you don’t remember that.”

Huh?

Josh leaned back into the seat next to me, chuckling under his breath. He shot me a look that said, “you’re on your own, man”as he took a swig of his beer, downing it in one gulp.

I turned my attention back to Addi – I mean,Britt, as she crossed her arms and glared into my fuckin’ soul.

“Were you that drunk when we hooked up, Hunter? Or was I just that underwhelming?”

I stared at her blankly. Absolutely no recollection of us getting together crossed my mind.

“Seriously?” She spat. “Nothing?”

I rubbed the stubble across my jaw and averted eye contact, trying to figure out how I would get myself out of this mess.

“Can I uh,” I licked my bottom lip, tasting broken skin and dried blood. “Can I get that cup of ice, please?”

Josh howled in laughter before covering his eyes and turning away from me completely.Definitely was not the right thing to say. Nah. But my fucking tongue feels like sandpaper and I’m tired as fuck and I’m not in the mood to have this fight. I’m not in the mood to do fucking anything but get home and pass out.

Britt snorted and uncrossed her arms, looking me up and down before grabbing a glass of water from another server’s tray and throwing it in my face.

I closed my eyes, letting the cool water soak into my eyelashes, falling down to my neck and coating my flushed skin.Feels like a damn nice bath.

With pride, she stomped off and escaped into the kitchen.
