‘You’re on fire.’

‘I know. How are yours going?’

‘Also good.’ He raised his glass and smiled.

She wondered what he’d written down. Shemorewondered, though, how she was going to get her secret back. Should she just go for it? Just ask him if he could send the envelope back to her?

‘So, speaking of the secrets—’ obviously they hadn’t really been, but shehadto ask ‘—I have a little favour to ask…’

She stopped talking. Raf was looking at her, one eyebrow raised.

‘Georgie James. Are you…?’ He narrowed his eyes at her. ‘Are you asking me to return your secret?’

Shit.Yes. But, no, now she felt like she couldn’t admit she was. What if it made him decide to look at it? She’d known him vaguely most of her life but she didn’t actually know him properly at all. She had no idea what he’d do. He might think it would be funny to look at it or something.

‘No!’ she said. ‘Secret? Did I say secret? I meant resolutions.’

‘Oh. Right. So, speaking of the resolutions?’

‘What?’

‘You meant to say, “speaking of the resolutions”?’

‘Oh yes.’ Eek. Okay. ‘Yes, I was just going to say what a great idea the whole thing was.’

Raf nodded. ‘Yeah.’

Georgie narrowed her eyes at him and he grinned at her.

‘Never seen anyone look so miserable while they say something’s a great idea,’ he said. ‘You’re a terrible liar.’

‘Excuse me. No, I’m not.’ She could totally lie. She did a little head roll and stretch of her shoulders and said, ‘You know, I felt really good after our run this morning.’ True. ‘I really enjoyed it.’ Lie. ‘If you’re still up for it I’d like to go again tomorrow morning, maybe a bit further?’ Lie.

‘Yep, sure, if you’re up for it.’

‘Of course I’m bloody not.’ She did a comedy exaggerated-eyebrow-raise and eye-roll at him. ‘This morning I felt like I was going to pass out and I vomited on you. It was torture. I’m going to torture myself in private next time. I lied and you believed me.’

‘Haha, nice lying. I’m impressed.’

‘Thank you.’

‘Also pleased.’ He grinned at her.

‘Because everyone lies at least once every ten minutes?’

‘Exactly.’

Georgie rolled her eyes at him again and then realised that the conversation was going in the wrong direction. She needed to focus. And, actually, what had she been thinking? It would be completely safe to tell the truth about having forgotten her resolutions. Getting a look at them would be a big step in the right direction.

‘Sooooo.’ She smiled at him. ‘I was a teensy bit drunk last night.’

‘No way.’

‘Ha. Yes, I was. Anyway, I can’t actually remember what I wrote down for my resolutions. I did my usuals but also some extras.’

‘Oh, so you really aren’t going to be able to stick to them.’

‘Exactly.’
