Exactly.
I think I might disappoint you. I can skate but I cannot perform Olympic ice dance routines.
Me neither but I need to learn. I need to be Torvill by the end of the year. Specifically, I need to be able to successfully perform a jump.
Resolution?
Yes.
No problem.
Okay.
Georgie’s face was almost aching she was smiling so hard as she typed.
I’ll research ice rinks and I’ll be back…
Aren’t you asleep right now, though?
What? Oh, she’d posted the early-to-bed selfie. Dammit. Raf was very annoying.
I’m in bed, NEARLY asleep. I’ll be properly asleep in a minute.
They say you shouldn’t use your phone in bed. Blue light.
You never use your phone in bed?
Ha yes of course I do.
Georgie took a moment to imagine Raf in bed – mmm – and then typed,
Ha hypocrite. Night.
Goodnight. Sleep well x
Funny how quickly they’d got to this comfortable messaging stage. After Beth had mentioned that Raf was returning to Bristol, Georgie had sent him a few messages asking how his finger was because she wanted to stay in touch because of the letter. But somehow here they were now, texting like buddies. She hadn’t been friends like this with a man for a long time. Ever, really.
It was hopefully going to come in very handy for getting the secret back.
Georgie used her lunch break the next day to make hay while the sun shone and booked the two of them in for a skating lesson the following Friday evening. She messaged Raf.
Send me your address and I’ll pick you up.
Honestly don’t worry. I can cab it.
No, really, I’ll be passing almost by your door.
You don’t know where I live?
Quirk of geography: all other places are somewhere between me and the ice rink.
Oh right well in that case I’d love a lift.
And hey presto she had his address.
And inside his address – which was now in Bristol, not New York, hooray, hooray, hooray – would be her letter.
She dipped a carrot in houmous and thought about her position. She obviously needed to find out as soon as possible whether she was right about the secret, but either way it would bemuchbetter not to have it written down and out there, so it would be amazing to get the letter back. Or swap it, actually. She should swap in a different piece of paper with a tamer secret on it. Use her new steaming skills. She’d better remember to take some Pritt Stick.
