Luca was huddled in the corner of the bathroom, his knees drawn to his chest. His guards were nowhere in sight.

What the actual fuck?

“Luca!” I shouted. “Come!”

He lifted his gaze to me, surprise flickering in his eyes, and then he hopped to his feet.

“We need to go!” I said.

He broke into a run, and he was about to run through the door when I caught his arm and yanked him back.

“Stay behind me!” I hissed.

He blinked at me in confusion.

I lifted my hand with the gun to show him why he needed to listen to me. I was the one with a gun. He didn’t have any weapons or ways to defend himself.

Was he in shock?

“Sorry, I thought you needed me to—” he said.

“What? To be a human shield?”

His eyes met mine.

Yep, he’d thought that was why I’d come for him.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, Luca,” I said. “Just be careful. We need to be quick.”

We raced down the hallway. The alarms were still blaring, and the lights were flickering.

Before we rounded the corner, I stopped and put my hand up.

When I took a peek around the corner, I saw an unfamiliar man. I fired at him before he spotted me.

“Run!” I yelled to Luca, and then we were on the move again.

A man burst out from one of the rooms, his gun aimed straight at Luca.

“No!” I shouted, throwing myself in the way and firing at the man.

A hot shock of pain spread through my shoulder and arm, but I ignored it. We had to keep moving.

I caught Luca’s hand as we raced downstairs. When we burst into the garage, Rafael’s shoulders slumped in relief.

“Get in!” I yelled to Luca, and we got in the car.

The others were already driving away. I caught a glimpse of a few bodies lying on the ground.

“They better be fucking dead!” I raised my voice.

“They are,” Rafael said from the front seat.

“No, I mean Luca’s guards! What the fuck were they thinking leaving him behind like that?” Anger coursed through me now, and it was mixed with relief that Luca was fine, but I was also pissed that we’d been attacked in the first place.

“Are you okay?” Luca asked, and I met his worried gaze. “You’re bleeding.”

I glanced at my shoulder. “It’s just a scratch. I’ll be fine. The bullet grazed me.”
