“I didn’t.”
“You must have.”
“I possess no such power.”
“Don’t you, though?” She reminded him what he was. “Youarea medium, right? You can summon the dead?”
“Ja.”He lowered his great head and considered her with his flaming light blue eyes.“I didn’t summon you, though. If anything...”
“If anything, what?” she asked when he paused.
“If anything, your spirit is attracted to me.”
“Yeah, right.” She snorted. “Hard to imagine.”
“Regardless,”he replied.“Every so often, spirits have unresolved issues and seek me out. Even though you’re technically alive, maybe your spirit’s drawn to me because you have some sort of unresolved issue.”
“Yeah, you, I bet,” she nearly said but bit her tongue.
“So going off that theory,” she replied, “you’re the one who led us back in time, and I simply followed.”
“Yes.”He continued up the tunnel.“Stay behind. See if your spirit follows me again.”
She listened, and it did.
“Super,” she muttered. “So there’s no getting away from each other until we figure this out.” She couldn’t help a mocking tone. “So much for spending any alone time with Revna while I’m here.”
“I had no intention of being alone with her,”he assured.“That would be thoughtless.”
“Oh, that boat’s sailed.” Had she sensed hesitation in his mind? “Why do I get the feeling being alone with her is...trying somehow?” Only one thing made sense, and it gave her a great deal of pleasure. “You’re that miffed over her and Loki, eh?”
“No.”
She definitely detected a strain in his internal voice as well as a truth just out of reach.
“Well, if you don’t want to be alone with her for that reason,” she wondered, “what else is there?”
She almost had it. His thoughts were becoming clearer by the moment. The fog was lifting. She would know what he hid in no time. Because hewashiding something. Unfortunately, she had no chance to peer deeper before they arrived at the Rift.
Moreover, arrived at the first real leg of what would be a very revealing journey.
