And I’d be damned if I didn’t do everything in my power to make their dreams come true. Starting right now.

With a plan forming, I told Millie to finish packing while I took my phone out to make a quick call. When I was done, I headed into Kate’s room to pack a few items for her. Everything went well until it was time to rifle through her underwear drawer.

When I slid it open, my mouth went bone fucking dry.

This woman had a penchant for expensive, sexy-as-sin lingerie. With no signs of anything black, white, or nude, my Kitty Kat liked bold colors. And fuck if that didn’t flood my mind with too many illicit images to count.

What a pretty picture she’d make wearing one of these as she crawled across the bedroom floor toward me. Or even better, spread out on my desk where I could devour her with my eyes and mouth.

Shit. Considering how damn fast I’d gone rock fucking hard, packing up her underwear might not have been my best idea. But the alternative—the one where I didn’t take a thing—was worse.

I couldn’t imagine keeping my hands to myself knowing Kate was strutting around without any underwear.

That was why I yanked out the drawer and dumped everything in it into the overnight bag I’d found in her closet.

“All done?” I asked when Millie skipped into the living room a short while after me.

“Yup.”

I grinned at her. “Then let’s go home, princess.”

Chapter thirty

Kate

Everything changed.

One moment I was guarding my heart against Tristan, and the next, he ripped the rug out from under me when he confessed his feelings.

Never saw that coming.

Just like I never, not once in a million years, could’ve imagined him asking me for the opportunity to earn my trust. If there’d been any semblance of a wall left around my heart, he’d obliterated it.

That knowledge didn’t freak me out even half as much as I thought it would. Who knew? Who knew the person who’d make me feel again would be Tristan freaking Blake.

And yes, I was still very much aware of his past. I just chose to leave it where it belonged.

“Comfy?” I asked Millie as soon as she snuggled into her pillow.

She was on her side with Mochi clutched close to her chest. “Mhm.”

Herexcitement had bubbled over from the minute she and Tristan had walked through the door. We could hardly get a word in over her fast-paced talking and need to explore every corner of the penthouse.

But now when it was just me and her in Tristan’s massive guest bedroom, it was easy to read the fear in her eyes. Taking the spot next to her, I too turned on my side to face her. I tucked a few curly strands behind her ear.

“What’s with the worried look on your pretty face?”

Her green eyes held mine for a split second before her gaze shot to the ceiling. She didn’t say anything, simply stared for the longest time.

“Hey,” I said, stroking her cheek. “What’s up?”

Finally, her eyes met mine, shiny with tears threatening to fall. My heart squeezed painfully.

“When Tristan and Izzy came to the school, I thought something happened to you...like…like…Mommy.” The first tear fell then another and another. “I was scared.”

“Oh, Bug.” Wrapping my arms around her, I pulled her to me. “I’m sorry I scared you.”

“I don’t want you to leave me like Mommy did.”
