“You know,” Josie said. “Smacking me around. Choking me, that sort of thing.”

“Really?” Daniel said, a bit uncomfortable with the idea.

“Sure,” Josie said. “Why not?”

Daniel shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess I just didn’t think you were into that sort of thing.”

“Well, I am,” she said. “Why, aren’t you?”

“Not really.”

“Oh,” Josie said. She was clearly disappointed.

“I mean, don’t get me wrong,” Daniel said. “I’m no goody-goody, but the sort of thing you’re talking about? It’s not really my style.”

“So you’ve tried it before?”

“Once or twice.”

“But you didn’t like it.”

“Not really,” Daniel said. More to the point, he didn’t like himself after doing it. But there was no need to go into that right now.

“Well, that’s too bad,” Josie said. “Because the way things have been going, we need to do something different.”

“It hasn’t been that bad.”

“No, but it hasn’t been all that great either. Not lately at least.”

“And you think this will change things,” Daniel said, his tone skeptical.

Josie smiled. “I know it will.”

“I don’t know—”

“You want to give me what I want, right,” Josie said.

“Of course,” Daniel replied.

“Well, this is what I want.”

“You’re sure about that?”

“Absolutely,” Josie said.

Daniel dropped his eyes and shook his head.

“What’s the problem?” Josie said.

“I’m just not comfortable doing those kinds of things to you,” Daniel said. “Or to anyone, really.”

“That’s the whole point,” she said. “To take you out of your comfort zone.”

“I know,” Daniel said. “But—”

“But nothing,” Josie said. “You asked me what it would take to keep this little affair of ours going, and I’m telling you. If you’d rather we just go our separate ways—”

“You know that’s not what I want.”
