This wasn’t what he wanted.

It had never been what he wanted.

He didn’t want to lose her.

Apparently, it took doing exactly that to realize what he’d been too stupid to see before. He might not be fully aware of what love was, or how it felt, and he might not be good at recognizing it when it hit him over the head, but if there was such a thing as romantic love in his world…

Then he loved Kassidy Thomas.

Why else would he be in so much pain because she said she was done with him? Why else would he want to curl up in a corner and cry, but decide to fight instead? Why else would he have lost a piece of himself when she told him she didn’t want to be with him anymore, and that she loved him? It was because he needed her back. He had to show her he wasn’t messing around this time.

That he wasn’t giving up on them.

She loved him, and he loved her.

It had been six hours since he last spoke to her, and it had been six hours of pure and utter hell. He had a night workout at seven with his trainer to prepare for this weekend’s game, so he’d decided to stop by on his way to try and talk to her…again.

Gritting his teeth, he threw his last pebble, not breaking eye contact with the window, as if his willpower to see her again would conjure her. It didn’t. He closed his fists at his sides. Right now, he was a quarterback without a team. Without them, he was useless. Without her, he was a goner. Give him a playbook and a ball, and he knew exactly what to do.

But when it came to matters of the heart, he was out of his element.

His phone buzzed in his pocket, and he pulled it out, frowning, half expecting it to be Kassidy telling him to fuck off. He wouldn’t blame her.

Instead, it was Eric, his older brother.

nbsp; He’d gone and chased a girl across the country and was now living in Texas, so they didn’t see each other much anymore. It had been at least a week since they’d last spoken, and Wyatt had told him about Kassidy. That had been before it all went to hell, though. Grimacing, he shifted the flowers he held to his left hand and answered. “Hello.”

“Hey, man,” Eric said, his voice loud and cheerful. Ever since falling in love with Shelby and moving to a small town in the middle of nowhere, he always sounded happy. Lucky son of a bitch. “How’s things?”

“Not so great,” Wyatt admitted. “If we’re being honest.”

Eric sighed, “What did you do?”

“Why do you assume it was me—?”

“What did you do?” Eric repeated, deadpan. “Last time we talked, you were into this girl, and talking about a future with her. What could have possibly—?”

“She’s pregnant.”

Silence. Dead silence.

“And I didn’t react well.”

A sigh. “What did you say?”

“I asked if it was actually mine—”

“Fair enough question,” Eric said in his lawyer tone.

“And then told her about guys on my team who had girls lie about the paternity of their kids for some quick cash.”

Eric groaned. “Shit.”

“Yeah.” Wyatt blinked at the flowers in his hand. He’d bought them at her store, and her brother had glowered at him the whole time. Clearly, he was no longer a fan. Again, he didn’t blame him one little bit. He wasn’t exactly a fan of himself right now either. “I messed up.”

“Yeah, you did.” Eric sighed again. “Good news is when people are in love with one another they tend to forgive a lot, so you might be able to fix this.”
