“How did you know that’s what I wanted?” She gasped and blinked back tears but didn’t slow down or miss a beat driving. “Okay, my turn. My secret is, I have no idea what to get you for Christmas.”

“Do they always do that?” Stacia panted through clenched teeth.

“I have no idea,” Will answered. “Hey, Kat, you’re going to want to go left up here because there are a lot of lights if you go right.”

“Are you mansplaining driving to the woman who’s driving us to the hospital?” Stacia asked.

Kat and I both pressed our lips together to keep from laughing.

“Technically, it’s not mansplaining,” Will mansplained, “because—hey, Kat, wrong direction! The lights!”

“Lights won’t be a problem,” she called back to Will. Quietly, she said, “Thanks, Charlie,” and I knew Pasco was in her ear and on the case.

The first light in front of us turned green.

“It’s a Christmas miracle!” I called back to Stacia and Will. “I predict we’re going to have green lights and good luck all the way to the hospital.”

Kat smiled and reached over to squeeze my hand, knowing I was in on the secret.

“Hey, quid pro quo,” I said softly, for her ears only. “About that gift… I already have what I want. All I want for Christmas is you.”

The cat at my feet yowled.

I grinned at her. “You and Mr. Whiskerbottom Fuzzypants.”
