“I—uh…” he starts, then clears his throat. “I don’t usually make resolutions.”

There’s a brief silence. Not uncomfortable, just… curious.

“But,” he continues, eyes locked on hers, “this year, I think I might try something new.”

“Oh yeah?” she asks, still smiling. “Like what?”

He hesitates. His fingers brush the base of his glass. “Showing up for things. Even when I’d rather hide.”

Something flickers in her expression. Interest. Surprise. Maybe something else.

“Well,” she says, her voice quieter now, “you’re off to a good start.”

His lips twitch, barely a smile.

Mila peeks past Natalie. “And you, Jesse?”

“Hmmm. What do you think, Mac?” he asks. Natalie doesn’t miss her brother’s hopeful look toward his mentor, like a puppy wagging his tail.

“Don’t look at me,” Jake says, leaning back and crossing his arms. “New Year’s resolutions should be personal.”

“Alright, mine is to keep on top of my laundry.”

“A noble pursuit,” Natalie responds, her tone dry.

“I learn English.” Pavel offers. “Not just swears.”

“But you’re so good at them, Pav,” Jesse quips.

“I think that’s great, Pavel,” Jake says, nodding encouragingly. “The guys and I will help you.”

“What about you, Jakey?” Mila asks, tilting her head with a playful glint in her eye.

Jake shrugs, fork idling on his plate. “Read more books.”

“Strong, scrappy, and now he’s studious,” Mila says, smirking. “Who knew you were the full package?”

Natalie doesn’t laugh. She’s too busy watching Jake.

The way he pushes a thumb along the edge of his plate. The slight curve at the corner of his mouth when he’s pretending not to smile. The softness in his eyes when he’s not performing for the room. It’s not fair how easily he takes up space in her chest.

“Nat?”

She blinks.

“Hmmm?”

Mila waves a hand in front of her face. “Earth to Natalie. Your New Year’s resolution?”

“Oh. Um.” Natalie feels the heat creep up her neck as she drops her gaze to her water glass. “I can’t think of anything.”

Mila leans forward with a grin that’s equal parts teasing and strategic. “Then I’ll make one for you.”

“No, please?—”

“Too late. Your resolution shall be…” Mila pauses dramatically, “to read fewer books and go on more dates.”

Laughter hums around the table, but Natalie forces a smile she doesn’t quite feel. Her heart gives a pathetic little tug.
