“Old and worn out?” I tease.

“No!” he snaps, making me jump again. Softening he adds, “Wonderfully timeless and beautiful.” He laughs when I turn a deep shade of red.

“That could possibly be the best pickup line of all time,” I say, laughing.

“Did it work?” he asks, winking at me. I roll my eyes, but honestly, it just damn near did.

“Oh! We need to go,” I tell him, checking my watch.

“Okay. Where are we going?”

“Oh Colin, I’m sorry! I should have told you I volunteer for a homeless shelter. I’ve already agreed to help out today. It’s why I told you to be here so early. After we’re done, we’ll still have plenty of time to come back here for our dinner. I hope that’s okay.”

“That’s fine, Maggie,” he says, holding up his hands to stem the flow of words. With a sweeping motion, he points toward the door, “Lead on. I’ll drive.” Wiggling my key, I finally manage to get my kitchen door locked. “You want me to look at that later?”

“What would you know about fixing a sticky lock?”

“Why Miss Emerson, you’d be surprised at the things I can do with my hands!” He’s teasing but I look at him seriously.

“I’m not sure I would be, Mr. Rhett.”

Son of a bitch! Does she have any idea what she looks like answering the door like that? I had every intention of being on my best behavior when she invited me for Thanksgiving, but I’m only human. When the door opened, I completely lost my train of thought.

She was dressed in a tiny pair of shorts that almost gave me an unobstructed view of ass cheek when she turned. That was enough to have me strangling the flowers in my hands to keep from wrapping her legs around my waist while I fucked her against the hallway wall.

As if that wasn’t enough, she also had on a long-sleeved almost see-through T-shirt that, when the cold breeze hit her, gave me a perfect view of her erect nipples underneath. When she left for the shower, I had just caught my breath again, before she came bouncing back down the hall to tell me she likes the flowers. I had forgotten that I even had flowers.

Reaching the kitchen I set down the stuff in my hands before pouring the hottest cup of coffee I can. Chugging it, I embraced the burn hoping it would take my mind off of my throbbing dick. I have to get myself back under control before she kicks me to the curb.

She finds me back in the hall, in theory, looking at the pictures when she emerges from her bedroom. Really, I’m just hoping for a peek at more skin. The picture of the proud woman smiling with her child in front of this house did pique my interest though. For starters, it never occurred to me until then that Maggie is half Asian. Based on the picture of her mother, she inherited more of her beauty than Maggie realizes.

Now I’m driving across town to volunteer at a homeless shelter Thanksgiving dinner. I’m starting to question what in the hell I’m doing with Maggie. I can’t measure up to someone like her. She’s brilliant, beautiful, selfless, and self-reliant. What could I possibly offer her? A pretty playboy with a short attention span and a job I hate? I notice the car window next to me roll down.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“Just trying to let out some of the pent-up smoke from the gears in your brain overworking.” I laugh while rolling the window back up. I might not be good enough for her, but I’m not sure I want to survive without her.

“So what will I be doing?” I ask as we park the car.

“I’m not sure. I just go where I’m assigned. We’ll find out shortly.” I follow Maggie into the run-down industrial building. She obviously volunteers here often since she is welcomed warmly by name by several people waiting in line. When we enter the room a large gentleman calls over to us.

“I’m so glad you could make it Maggie. I have you serving dressing. You brought help!” After introductions, I’m assigned to helping clear tables. I enjoy interacting with people, so I think this will be a good fit for me.

Two hours later, I find myself sitting at a table with a group of people around me. I’ve hunted down a note pad, working through an illegal eviction for one of the elderly women eating her turkey dinner.

“I’ve got a law school buddy here in town that will love to help you with this. You have a very solid case. Let me give him a call on Monday and see if we can’t get you back in your apartment soon.” When I’m sure I have all of her information, she gives me a hug before shuffling off.

The next person to sit down is a young mother with three kids quietly eating where she can keep her eye on them. By the time I’m driving back toward Maggie’s house, I’ve filled two pads full of information. It sickens me that these people have been treated so poorly when they are already at their most vulnerable. Looking over at Maggie, I find her grinning at me.

“What?” I ask.

“Colin, you’ve had the biggest smile on your face since we left the shelter.”

“Have I?” Yeah, I guess I have.
