Ten new partygoers and twenty minutes later, Kit returns. He steps into the apartment and leaves the door unlocked in the frame behind him.

There's concern all over his face as he looks around the room.

His eyes catch mine.

I motion to the study. It's empty. I've been watching the door and everyone has stayed on the party/kitchen/drinks side of the apartment.

Kit nods. He takes one last look around the room the

n he slips into the study.

I play cool for a minute, sipping my sparkling apple cider, laughing at someone's joke. I'm not sure who it is that made the joke, but it must be hilarious, because everyone is laughing.

"Excuse me," I say to no one in particular. First, I go to the kitchen and pour myself another glass of sparkling apple cider.

Everyone is still chatting, flirting, having fun. I'm safe.

I slip through the room and into the office. I lean my back against the door then turn the lock.

It's just me and Kit in here.

In the dark.

I guess the room should stay dark. Better for keeping this under wraps.

Still, there's something off about it.

He's leaning against the wall, the same hurt look in his eyes. Even as he meets my gaze, frustration is written all over his face.

I push off the door. "What happened?"

"My dad called."

I move closer. I still can't figure out his expression. He's hurt but is he angry, sad, worried? "Did he leave a message?"

"Yeah, but it was fuzzy. I couldn't make it out. Called him back but he didn't pick up."

"Where did you go?"

"Took a walk to try to clear my head."

"I guess it didn't work."

He shakes his head.

He's going away from me again.

I hate it.

I slide my hand up his chest and over his shoulder. "You look good tonight."

He gives me a long once over. His eyes get wider. His attention shifts back to the room. "You look fucking amazing in that dress."

"Thank you."

His eyes go off.
