“That may be why they looked at me so strangely when I showed up at work this morning.”

“I think they were probably surprised to see you.”

Chapter 4

Outbreak

Oret loved lookingat his mate as she slept. He couldn’t keep staring at her because there was so much to do.It was time to let others know that they had mated and that she would need her assistants to continue stepping up until she recovered from it.No human could mate with a Majuri and not be affected by it for at least a few days.Victoria would be no exception. While she went through her change, he would keep his eye on her mines and the people running them. After all, he had committed the act that would cause her to need rest and be unable to fulfill her duties. He’d bet she recovered quickly.

After checking on the mines, he had to check on his builders and finally the kitchen. It was a surprise when he saw Victoria sitting in the cafeteria with her daughter, Sara, eating lunch. That probably meant her change was taking effect slowly. He'd never heard of anyone avoiding some issues with their change.Oret decided to join them, as they had probably already seen him.He set his tray down on the table and sat with them.

“I hope I'm not interrupting anything.”

“No, we’re just eating lunch,” Sara said.

“I was up at the mine this morning.”Victoria offered.

“Are you feeling alright?”Oret asked.

“A little tired, but I've certainly felt worse.I'm not really sure what I should do, but I think I can handle office work for now.”

Sara finished her meal and quickly left.

“I didn't run her off, did I?”Oret asked.

“Maybe she thought we needed this privacy.”

“Do we?Is there anything you want to ask?”

“I'll admit that I don't know a lot about the change.Maybe I should have asked more questions, but at the time, I wasn't sure that I would ever have a serious relationship again.”Victoria admitted.“When I woke up and didn't feel terrible, I thought maybe I was mistaken, and we hadn't mated.”

“No, you weren't mistaken because we mated.I didn't think you would be up and about this morning, and I did mention to your number two that you wouldn't be there.I'm sure they were surprised.”

“They certainly seem to be.I thought maybe it was, since I'd been off all week, that they were going to have to get used to me again.Apparently, they were just surprised to see me.”

“Every mate going through the change is different.I’m sure you will go through it.Maybe you are fighting it.”
