She shook her head. “I’m good for now. Please no visitors for the next few days. I’d like it to just be us for a while.”

“Absolutely,” I replied.

For the next few minutes, I stood by Bianca’s side until she fell asleep. Sighing, the empath in me released the heaviness inside me. If I wanted Bianca to make a successful breakthrough, I had to be on my A game. Someone tried to destroy her life. Like Antonias, I was determined that Bianca loved herself and life beyond her loss.

CHAPTER 5

ADRIAN BELL

Ipulleduptothe farm exhausted as hell. Classes were beating my ass, but I was determined to get this shit done and get back to my life. The only reason I came out of my studying cave was to see about my sister. She hadn’t answered the phone the last two times I called her, and I didn’t like that shit. Although Antonias assured me that Bianca was good, I felt a way thinking she was ignoring me or some shit.

Climbing out of my Suburban, I inhaled a deep breath of country ass air. This shit would never be the life for me, but I fucked with how expansive and wealthy this farm shit looked.

Russ, who was across the lawn fooling with a horse, chucked his head at me. I did the same back and knocked on the front door.

When the door opened, a face I wasn’t planning to see met me. Kwamé was the only woman on this earth who ever made me stop and reflect on her beauty. Every damn time I saw her, she rendered me speechless. Her deep brown skin was immaculate right down to the tiny mole above the right side of her thick ass lips. The lips she licked just then because she saw me staring.

“Hey, Adrian.”

Shit.Lil’ baby could’ve hypnotized me with that damn soothing ass voice. Between her voice and her soft brown eyes, I was standing here like I was unfamiliar with a woman’s allure. I definitely wasn’t. School just had my mind in other places. The last thing I was thinking about was a woman.

A couple of snaps in front of my face brought me out of my stupor. Kwamé’s elegant hand boasted dainty ringless fingers, with well-manicured French-style nails. A few sparkly bracelets encased her left wrist. Like some candy, I wanted to bite them off her.

“You tryna seduce me outta my clothes wit’ that damn voice?”

She smacked her teeth and nearly shut the door on my foot. Cracking up, I held the door open.

“Aight, aight. I’ll chill out. ‘Sup, Kwamé?”

“Nothing much. How may I help you, Adrian?”

“I thought it would be obvious. I’m here to see my sister.”

She leaned against the door jamb and said, “I apologize, but Bianca has requested no visitors this morning.”

“I apologize… But I’on think you heard me. I’m her big brother. Let me in.” I said it nicely, but if she wanted me to get mean, I could.

“I apologize, again.Butyour sisterhas requested no visitors—”

Plucking Kwamé up, I put her over my shoulder like a sack of clothes fresh out the dryer.

“Boy! Put me the fuck down!”

Ignoring her irate ass, I went from the foyer, living room, then down a hall until I located Bianca’s room. As I walked inside, Bianca looked at me indignantly.

She gasped. “Adrian! Put her down!”

Chuckling, I sat Kwamé on her feet. She bucked at me like she wanted to swing. I wouldn’t lie, her lil’ ass looked even sexier with that scowl on her face.

“You can’t just barge in here,” Bianca fussed.

“Like hell, I can’t. You didn’t answer the damn phone. Fuck I look like.” Bianca didn’t even argue because she knew better. Bending down, I kissed her forehead just as a baby’s cries broke through a monitor sitting on the nightstand.

“I’ll be right back,” Kwamé said and dashed from the room. My eyes followed her out.

“Are you staying the weekend?” Bianca asked.

“Might as well,” I replied.
