“I’ll take the first shift driving,” Ty said.

Neither of the women called shotgun, so after helping them into the back, Con slid in next to Ty.

So far there was no sign of military activity.Did that mean they were clear of Area 51?

Ty reached down between the seats and handed him a tablet.

“Find out where we are?”he asked.

It was, Con realized, a good feeling to know that he probably could.Though the when of where they were was still out there.

Chapter19

As the camper made its circuitous way in the direction of the silo, they found they were also driving slowly into their own time.

The news and music on the radio shifted, as did the road signs and other landmarks.

They arrived at the silo on the same day they’d left.

It was a bit disconcerting, Con thought, as he pulled the camper to a stop just outside the hangar. Was his Pitts inside?

What had changed—if anything?

The security cameras must have been working because Mel and Jack emerged from the small office next to the hangar.

“I have a feeling it is going to be a long debrief,” Ty said.

“As long as there isn’t a test after,” Con said, slanting him a grin.“I am terrible at tests.”

Ness had been settled in the other bunk in the small topside apartment behind the hangar.Rita had waited until her lashes drifted closed, then quietly let herself outside.

The desert night was properly cool, with the scents of plants she hoped one day to be able to name.If they let her stay here.

She studied the edges, noting that time was quiescent for now. There’d been changes. There must have been changes, but she didn’t know for sure what they were.

She remembered everything that had happened, well, out of time, was the only way she knew how to describe it.But what had they changed?

She tried to resist thinking that only time would tell. But fighting it only made the thought pop out.

Time.

It was both friend and enemy. It rolled them all forward to destinations only it knew about.

Somewhere in the future were there those who were still trying to figure out how to study time, to shift it to their purposes?

She’d come from that future, but she didn’t trust her memories of it now.

What had happened to Stella, Alastor, and John?Had they been tumbled through time and dropped somewhere?Or had they been erased?

Even if she went back, she would probably never know.

She strolled out onto the runway and watched the moon rise.Could she go back?

Jack’sRaywas in the hangar, next to Con’s Pitts. But now that their questions had been answered, what would they do?

And what would they do with her?

“Rita?”
