Red made it a question so she nodded.
“You think someone was messing with your head?”
She took a minute to process the slang.“I didn’t think that much about it at first. It was fun, interesting.”
“Exciting?”
She chuckled.“Not the way they let me do it.”She sobered.“Not until I met you.”She gave him a sly smile.“Got exciting after that.”
“Why did you?Approach me, I mean?”
“Should she be sharing this much?”Ty asked, with a frown and a glance at Alice.
She was back in the containment chamber trying to open the recall device that Rita had given them.
“No,” Jack said.He glanced at Mel.
“Is it real or is it Memorex?”she quipped. From their camera view, Rita looked almost relieved as she answered Con’s questions. As if a dam had burst. That didn’t mean it wasn’t all designed to trap them, of course.
“Her experiences are a bit like Alice’s,” Ty noted.“Do you think she’s the reason for their jumps through time?Con didn’t show any time senses when you tested him.”He stiffened.“She didn’t bring them here deliberately, did she?She couldn’t do that?”
Jack shrugged.“There is no way to know.”
“Anyway to find out?”Mel asked. She kept her gaze fixed on Rita’s face, trying to read truth or lies as she talked.
“I don’t know,” Jack said again.
Mel shot him a look.
He threw up his hands.“I know, I should never had gotten into this with all the things I didn’t know.”
But then they would never have met.Mel patted his hand.“It’s okay. What’s done is done.”
Jack grinned.“Indeed and more than once.”
Mel felt her cheeks heat and gave him a look amped up with stern.
“We are grownups,” Alice said with her containment hollow voice.“We know what’s done.”
“That we do,” Ty said, with an almost villainous tone of voice.
Alice ignored him.
“Do you think she’ll let us look at her list?”Mel asked. It felt like a good idea to move on now.
Con and Rita had fallen silent, as if Con were trying to process all she’d told him.Mel was glad they were recording. It was a lot to process.
“Why did you write these lists, Rita?”Con asked finally.
“I wondered if there might be some way to track them in there.”Rita sounded hopeful.
“But you know where you came from,” he objected.
“Yes and no.I know the when, but the only way I have to get back there was using the recall device, and that would land me in the base.I don’t have an exact location for it.”
Con looked surprised.“You don’t know where it is?”
“We arrive and leave in controlled transportation.I go to a hub from my apartment.Fingerprint and eye scan to access the transport.”
