I laughed. Okay, so I’d still had a lot of worries. They’d just been different worries.

I palmed my phone and hit a few buttons.

“Yes.”

I snickered to myself. Mesmer was always the epitome of brevity, especially on the phone.

“I can’t sleep, and Rhys is here. Do you have time for a few rounds of poker?”

“I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

Chapter13

Mia

Around 4 or so, a note had been delivered to my desk indicating that I should dress casually for the evening. I’d laughed as Draven had attempted to look indifferent at the delivery of the note by burying himself in paperwork, and signing the million documents I’d left on his desk for him.

I remembered his half smile with a curl of warmth that settled in my tummy as I got ready.

Draven was the complete package. This both thrilled me and made me slightly nauseous becauseI didn’t have anything to wear!Seriously, I needed to go shopping, stat!

I rummaged in the back of my walk-in closet for a pair of black, skinny jeans and then shrieked in delight when I found a cream cable-knit sweater that I knew was warm and looked cute on me. I paired it with brown ankle boots that had faux fur lining and were insanely warm and then made my way to my bathroom to apply my makeup and do my hair.

After curling my hair and pinning back my bangs in a swoopy style, I finished off my makeup with gold eyeliner. Finally, I opened my jewelry case and found the pair I’d been thinking would go with the outfit, a cream dangle set that was both delicate and pretty.

Zian sniffed me and sneezed as I added another spritz of perfume. It smelled like vanilla and chocolate. One of my favorite scents to wear when the weather was cold.

I laughed as he tried to cover his nose and grumbled at me in disgust. “Yes, but people like it. I’m assuming vampires like it, too.”

Zian eyed me in disbelief, and I shrugged. “It’s true. I guess I’ll see tonight, though. I know their sense of smell is really strong. Maybe perfume is too much.”

Well, it was too late now. I couldn’t wash it off and still make it to the foyer in time.

I said a hurried goodbye to Zian and rushed down to the foyer, not wanting to be late, and made it just as the clock chimed 6.

It didn’t matter, because Draven was already there waiting for me.

Holy hannah the man wore jeanswell.

I resisted the urge to fan myself.

Draven had on a dark-gray cable-knit sweater, similar to mine but more fitted, and dark-wash blue jeans.

I looked down at his feet.

Blue Converse.

If I could have gotten away with sighing in appreciation right then I would have. Seriously, he was wearing Converse? Le sigh.

“Wow, you look so nice,” I stammered, making him laugh.

“I think I need to dress down more often. You’re looking at me like you usually ogle the chocolate-chocolate-chip muffins that Henri makes for you by the dozen.”

Yes. Yes, I was.

Down girl.

And it was even more ridiculous because my heart flipped at his laugh, and those champagne bubbles popped in my chest.
