He shrugged. “There were a lot of opportunities to travel when I was boarding professionally. Why, how many countries have you been to?”
“Um. Two, if you count the one that we’re currently in. The other one was the Bahamas when our cruise ship docked there.”
“You’veneverleft the country? How is that even possible? Do you have a passport?”
“Um, excuse you. Yes, I have a passport. I just told you, I went to the Bahamas. That counts as leaving the country.”
“You didn’t even have to get on a plane, and you probably spent five hours there.”
My mouth snapped shut. It was only three. “Well, whatever. Sorry I haven’t had endless opportunities like you, Mr. hotshot.”
“You don’t want to see other parts of the world?”
I considered this. Growing up, I had always dreamed of going to different countries in Europe or Asia. I wasn’t sure when that dream died. After I graduated from college, Garrett and I never discussed going farther than the Keys. His parents had a place down there, and it was his favorite vacation spot.
“I’m not sure,” I admitted. “I used to want to travel. The opportunity never really presented itself. Then suddenly, I blinked, and I’m almost thirty, and I haven’t been anywhere.”
“Well, it’s not too late.”
“What's your favorite country that you’ve been to?”
He thought about it for a moment before responding.
“Probably Japan. I’ve had a few great boarding trips out there, and the country is all-around spectacular."
“Wow, I’d love to go someday.”
“You should,” he said, nudging my shoulder.
Butterflies exploded in my stomach on contact. I took a sip of cocoa to hide my flushed cheeks and ease my nerves. This easy banter between us was something I could get used to.
“Hey, what about the game,” he protested after my sip. “I didn’t even ask you an uncomfortable question yet, and you already took a drink.”
“Oh shit, I forgot.” The conversation was flowing so naturally ‘truth or drink’ was the last thing on my mind. “Do I get a pass on your next question?”
“No way.”
He stroked his chin as if he was wracking his brain to try and think of a really good question. “What was your last relationship like?”
I winced as reality smacked me in the face.
He caught my change in demeanor. “Or your current relationship. I guess I shouldn’t assume anything.”
“No, definitely former.” I wavered. “It’s just a bit of a sore subject.”
Giles raised his eyebrows, encouraging me to continue.
“We were together for a long time. We lived together. I thought he was the one, but he-he cheated on me instead.”
He sucked in a breath. “Ouch.”
“He was doing it for months.”
“Double ouch.”
“With my best friend.”
“Holy shit, Florida.” He rubbed his hand over his mouth. “That’s tragic. How did you find out?”
