Sebastian jumped. The vehemence of Mason’s declaration sent a shiver down his spine. Not like he hadn’t heard it before just an hour ago, yet it still hurt. Mason’s miserable expression calmed Sebastian more than any words could. The fact he knew he’d said the wrong thing meant the world to him.

“Mom, Dad, you need to leave.” Mason glared at his parents, pointing toward the door.

His mom made a weird sound, half-sob and half-growl. “I can’t believe you’re choosing this human piece of trash over us.”

Sebastian couldn’t keep his mouth shut any longer. “Don’t call me that, and why do you keep calling me human? We’re all fucking human.”

“You think so.” Marcus moved so fast, in one moment he was across the room, the next a hairy paw grabbed him around the neck, his face morphing into one of a dog.

“What the fuck!” He screamed, his knees giving out, the grip around his throat the only thing holding him up.

An inhuman growl echoed around the room, and, suddenly, he dropped to the ground. On the other side of the room, what appeared to be twowolfmenfought. He closed his eyes. He had to be hallucinating.

He opened his eyes, but nothing had changed. What in the hell?He needed to leave before one of the creatures remembered he existed and he ended up dead. On shaking legs, he made his way to the door and, without looking back, fled.

He took off running down the stairs, not wanting to wait for the elevator in case they came after him. He reached the ground floor and burst through the door, unsure where to go. He’d flown up with Kate. Maybe, if he could find her, she’d give him a couch to sleep on until they headed back to Anchorage in the morning.

Kate’s in-laws owned the hotel, so Sebastian made his way to reception, hoping she and Nick could help. He rang the bell, and, a few seconds later, Kate stepped through a door behind the desk.

“Come on through, Sebastian. I’ve been waiting for you.”

“What? How?”

“Madame Eve is one amazing lady. She gave Nick a heads up.” Kate smiled and lifted a section of the counter for him to move through.

He couldn’t move. His mind ran a million miles an hour with what ifs. “I don’t understand.”

Kate grabbed his hand and dragged him into the office behind the reception desk. “I know you don’t, but I promise it will all be clear before morning. It’s Madame Eve’s way.”

His knees gave out, and he collapsed into a chair. In the space of one evening, his world had irrevocably changed, and he had no idea whether it was a good thing or bad.
