“You’re going to have trouble being superior if I’m the one who hangs up.” She had to ruin all my fun. Morgan handed me an apple and I made a sad face. They mouthed ‘brain food.’ Fine. I took the apple.

“Okay. Alicia heard you and I talking,” I explained.

“You and I don’t even talk.” We were doing that right now. “Very often,” she amended hastily.

“But that night before I left, when you said the thing, trying to make me feel better.”

There was a pause. “That really doesn’t sound like something I’d do.” Her voice sounded dubious.

“Yeah, but you did, saying at least I’m having sex.” I tried to whisper that part, and holy crap Luke was right, I can’t whisper. Morgan perked up and mouthed, you are?! I wanted to be mad Morgan was apparently a terrible gossip, but hey, that was another thing we had in common.

“Oh that, no. She didn’t hear that,” Lydia decided wrongly. The problem with people not realizing my genius was it meant more work for me.

“Obviously, she did,” I argued while trying to hold Morgan at bay as they kept coming closer, wanting to listen in.

“No, that’s not,” Lydia started then stopped. “It can’t. Really? I didn’t even mean it.”

“She thinks you meant it.” My kind, selfless bestie wanted to keep Lydia happy; I just hope Lydia felt the same way.

“But she just told me,” Lydia paused, then sighed. “She didn’t really mean it.” She sounded sad. I had no idea what she was talking about but before I could ask, she spoke again, sounding back to normal. “This is what I get for being nice? Normally I don’t even try to do that.” Sounded like she was never going to try again.

“Mmhmm, tough break.” I wasn’t really paying attention to her anymore.

My roommate came in at the exact right time because Morgan wasn’t on his bed anymore. Now, we wouldn’t be killed. Only then Morgan gave me a look, like saying this isn’t over and they wanted details later, no way in hell, and then they went over and jumped on my roomy’s bed, looking all happy and comfortable there.

My jaw dropped for a moment. What the hell? I was too young to die. Jeremy looked all murderous for a moment. Yep, he was back to being super scary. Morgan waved at him. I wanted to tell Lydia to tell Luke I loved him and was so going to haunt his ass, but I couldn’t find the words. Everything was super tense.

Then, Jeremey Roommate hurriedly got their stuff and left. What the hell was all that about?

And yeah, his last name probably wasn’t Roommate, but who could say for sure? Certainly not me since I forgot his last name. Or I remembered it perfectly if his actual last name was Roommate somehow.

“What do I do?” Lydia said. The words were spoken quietly but they got my attention anyway.

“I’m sorry, but our time is up.” I didn’t sound very sorry but that wasn’t entirely a lie.

I just had no answer. One: I wasn’t sure. My gut reaction was that they should do whatever Alicia wanted because she was my BFF. Two: Morgan pointed to their watch. Well, Morgan didn’t have a watch, so they were just pointing to where a watch would be if people still wore watches, but I got the picture. We had to get going.

“Ryan,” Lydia said. Her tone promised murder but hopefully her tone would forget about that by the time I got back.

“I have to go and I really don’t know,” I told Lydia while gathering my stuff with one hand.

“You’re her best friend.”

“And you’re her girlfriend. And when it comes to sex, the having of it or the not having of it, or whatever else, I think she’d want the Lydia approach and not the Ryan one.” It’s not like the Ryan approach went very well anyway.

“That a relief at least,” Lydia said. “Don’t think I could be that big of a spaz even if I tried.”

I rolled my eyes. “Okay, bye.”

“Wait,” Lydia said. She took a deep breath. “Thanks or whatever,” she mumbled.

The words weren’t much, but coming from her? “Oh stop,” I teased. “You’re embarrassing yourself.” Wow, she really was grateful because she didn’t say anything like, ‘isn’t that your job.’

At least some parts of my life were normal, even if stuff with Luke was weird.
