“Are you going to let me finish?” I wondered, pretending to be annoyed.

He sighed. “Go on.”

He made senior year one to remember. Not really a surprise. He could make a Tuesday afternoon one to remember. “Didn’t think I wanted any of this, but it’s pretty great.”

Ryan looked around dubiously.

“I mean, not this specifically,” I corrected. “Doing all this with you.”

Ryan turned his head away, smile forming on his face.

“This didn’t go very well,” I continued. “I’m still glad we did it.”

“Me too.” Ryan joined our hands.

We had a nice little moment, and then the rabbi came over to us.

I considered clamping my hand over Ryan’s mouth for a moment so he couldn’t start saying more Jewish words but that wasn’t necessary.

The rabbi hadn’t meant to keep us waiting and didn’t want to lecture us at all. He basically wanted to welcome us, a lot ofthe more the merrierkind of talk, with a little bit of well warranted advice to maybe be sure we knew the kind of party we were crashing next time. He had a sense of humor and got along with Ryan well and then we were out of party jail. All the girls from before wanted to dance with us, not just me butusand…

Best bar mitzvah ever.

Dad was working late, probably more because he didn’t want much downtime instead of an actual job-related reason. He didn’t want to mope around or be sad or obsess, so maybe I wasn’t really his offspring because I could engage in some quality moping when the situation called for it.

Who were my real parents? Cher and Nicolas Cage?

I would be rich, on the plus side, but that would be really weird.

Dad working late was alright because he was a strong independent woman who could make his own choices. Some of those things were true. He had to do what he had to do, which was working. I worried about him, but I also got pie.

When I got to the diner to order my pie and other food, Joanne was also there.

I tried to ignore her. Instead, my brain did that completely annoying, yet entirely predictable, thing where it zoned in on her.

Considering the circumstances, probably wasn’t a great idea to tally up all the things Joanne and I had in common, but the diner was apparently both of our favorites when it came to restaurants. There weren’t a ton of options here, so maybe that wasn’t a very big deal. Also, she was leaving, so yeah, definitely not a point in her favor.
