Chase held his hand out for me to shake. We shook quickly and I dropped his hand like it burned me, but the damage was already done. A jolt of electricity buzzed through my body at the contact. Though nowhere near as intimate as the thorough kiss with tongue we shared earlier, it felt just as powerful. Because this was real. An agreement between us, Chase and Lucas.

One guy to another.

Is he thinking about the kiss we shared too?I wondered as he led me out the door and to the elevators once more.I wasn’t brave enough to bring it up.

"You’re still taking me to say goodbye to my dad," I said.

"Like hell I am."

“If you don’t let me see him, I’ll leave again and go alone.”

“Nope, I’ll tie you up and keep you here.”

"Save it for your own time." A man strolled over to us.

"Hey, there you are.” Chase nodded to the newcomer and began making introductions. “This is Lysander Temple, my partner."

A tall man with a lithe frame and grey eyes. Soft waves of nearly black hair framed his face. I recognized him. This was the guy who warned me away from Chase. Oh boy.

Did he think it was his duty, a friendly warning? Did he want Chase himself? Whatever was happening, our little threesome suddenly seemed like a crowd. Hopefully this wasn’t too awkward.

9.Sniffing Out a Different Trail

Chase

This was awkward.

Lucas and I cleared the air and things were alright between us. That lasted .05 seconds. Then Temple busted up our party and a weird tension settled over our trio as we endured an extremely uncomfortable car ride to Lucas’s father’s house.

Unfortunately Lucas seemed serious about seeing his father in person. Us accompanying him was better than him leaving alone.

When we pulled up to his father’s bungalow inspired house, Lucas exited the vehicle and raced to the front door before the engine even shut off.

“Sure, just do whatever,” I complained. “Makes our job so much easier.”

"You know, I always thought you were the love ‘em and leave ‘em type,” Temple said. “Maybe it’s the other way around."

“Shut. Up.”

The bastard insinuated people fled after becoming intimate with me. My mind naturally flashed back to the kiss.

Lucas was a shockingly good kisser, melting into it faster than I expected and—w-whatever. Not paying attention and allowing somebody to tail me put Lucas in this mess. He didn’t need me adding more distractions like flirting, kissing, or hooking up…who said anything about hooking up?

Lesson learned about paying attention, Iexpanded my senses and searched for anything amiss outside. Nothing stood out.

After getting no answer from the doorbell, even if he only waited a second, Lucas tried again. He lifted a rock near the front door to grab the hidden key, supremely confused when nothing rested underneath.

Hold on, someone’s in the house.

The front door opened, showing a man too young to be Lucas’s father holding the formerly hidden key in one hand. “Lucas?”

“Jack? What are you doing here?”

“You took the words right out of my mouth.” Lucas offered no explanation, so he volunteered his own. “Uncle Todd offered to loan me his tackle box and newer fishing rod.”

Temple and I both tensed at the unexpected visitor, placing ourselves on either side of Lucas. The two seemed to know each other. Family, from the way they acted.

The guy, Jack, exited the house and shut the door. Larger than Lucas with a wider frame and a head taller, his color looked richer and tan compared to Lucas’s pale complexion. He glanced at us, but with the sun in his eyes, quickly focused back on the other man. "Did you know your dad’s looking for you?"
