"I need you to call Frost. There’s something I should tell you." He winced at his own words. “Oh god, I’m not sleeping with Frost.”

“That thought did not even cross my mind until you said it.” Whatever was coming, it was something major.

"This so isn’t the right moment to tell you, but I’m running out of time. Lysander, I’m not a dragon. I’m an angel. An injured one."

…When faced with the seemingly impossible, the simplest most obvious explanation was usually right.

"Did someone teach you what pranks are?" I asked.

“I thought I was having bad dreams, seeing the coven or remembering the past. But I don’t think I was seeing the past. It’s thefuture.I saw what happens to me.”

Well, he did not answer directly about the pranks and he made absolutely no sense so—

“I’m an angel,” Max said with absolute certainty. “I’m an angel and I’m going to explode.”

Lysander called Frost for me. First he received a message about the number being disconnected. Before he pressed the button to end the call, we heard Frost say hello over the speaker. Our explanations only just began when Frost hung up. The next second he showed up in Lysander’s apartment.

Frost appeared, wearing a bulletproof vest.

“Uh, are we interrupting something?”

Frost seemed confused by the question, so I motioned down to his body armor.

“Oh, the vest also blocks several offensive magical attacks a mage might ready quickly to escape when cornered.” He seemed especially glad to rid himself of the protective gear with a wave of his hand. “StoneinsistedI wear one when apprehending the Accelerant coven.”

"You guys caught them?" I asked. At least that was some good news.

"My team successfully captured our two targets. Other units are dealing with the rest. They can handle it without me. What’s going on?"

“Frost,” Lysander said like he just noticed the other angel. “I wasn’t aware you knew where I lived.”

That was the last time he sounded remotely normal before the explanations started and he became quieter and quieter. Frost confirmed that I was also an angel and in danger and Lysander absorbed it all in stunned silence. I had no idea what he thought or felt about all this.

I hadn’t taken the chances to tell him earlier. I rushed over here all ready to get closer to him, to remove the divides like I had with Frost. I told him I had a secret without telling him more.

Frost only mentioned a cover story due to the questions and possible danger in my past. He never explicitly told me to leave Lysander out of it, and he didn’t seem the least bit surprised or concerned about his fellow agent being involved now. The cover story seemed to be for others, not necessarily Lysander. He was the exception.

So I’d kept this from Lysander on my own. I hadn’t been totally sure why I held back then. Now I knew. I really needed to talk to him. And figure out the explosion thing. And come up with a plan.

"Have you caught up?" The other angel in the room broke the silence, speaking to the guy who just had his mind blown.

"Frost," I warned.

"We really don’t have much time."

Lysander finally looked up. “You just told me a second ago.”

"It’s been ten minutes since we finished catching you up," Frost pointed out.

“Huh, it felt like…” he went distant again.

My leg jingled up and down the same way I’d seen Rob do. I felt similarly anxious like Frost, but since my holding back meant Lysander had little time to process now, I also hated to rush him.

Normally Frost was the stillest person in the room. This time Lysander beat him. He sat at the edge of his couch, knees pressed against his coffee table. His fingers were steepled in front of his face like he’d become frozen in that pose.
