Frost eventually returned them to Orion Lennox for safe keeping. Apparently, Frost hadn’t yet caught on to Max and me snooping around on our own. Or he believed Orion would keep us away from the cuffs anyway.
Honestly, I was kinda surprised Orion even told me Frost returned the not-cuffs to him. But he did. Then I mentioned it to Max. And now he was letting us both take a peek.
A steel vault loomed before us. We were all hushed by the gravity of the moment.
Plus, life was crazy. How did I ended up dating a guy that had a personal vault tucked behind a painting for valuables? He hadvaluablesand that wasn’t just a clever name for his cock and balls.
Orion saw my expression and knew what I was thinking. “Just wait until you find the secret switch that leads to the hidden room.”
Was he kidding? Was he Batman? Was I dating Batman?
Max hovered near the door and finally found his way inside once Orion began imputing his combination for the safe. He even found his voice to warn the incubus. "If this relic really has a connection to Heaven too, Frost will probably find out if you do this."
I moved my hand frantically over my throat, signaling Max to cut it out and not ruin this for us. Either he didn’t know that gesture or ignored me.
Fortunately, Orion hadn’t changed his mind.
"If you’re one of the only beings from Heaven on this planet, you deserve to see this. I understand what it’s like to learn part of your history doesn’t come from Earth."
As touching as this moment was, I needed to ruin it.
"Okay, come on,” I demanded. “Show us the goods."
Orion raised an eyebrow pointedly."Youdon’t have to be here."
"You wouldn’t let me see them again otherwise! I even tried withholding sex."
"You caved almost immediately."

"I did no such thing," he scoffed.
"Did too, your face is one of your sex powers. Your body is another."
Orion graciously accepted defeat. "My apologies."
"Thank you. Now come on, show us the goods."
Orion brought out the item and showed us the designs to inspect. There were circles etched into the metal of each ring. Intersecting circles, three in total. On the first ring, the first circle was shaded in. Another metal ring was added since I saw them last.
They weren’t cuffs, there were three of them in all. The missing one in the center had the second circle shaded in. On the last, the third was shaded in.
Each ring corresponded to a different planet, Heaven, Earth, or Hell.
Lex used the Hell cuff to open a portal to that world. Did the others have similar powers? Max just wanted to look at the cuffs and see if he sensed anything.
Even though each ring looked solid and immutable, Orion twisted his hands and the cuffs in a certain way and one ring came apart from the others. He handed it to Max. Max’s hand shook a little as he reached up, not even breathing, to accept the possibly sacred offering.
