“I know, it’s surreal, isn’t it?”
“I suppose you have Megan to thank for that.”
“I wouldn’t be here without her, that’s for sure.”
Jason pressed his lips to the edge of his glass, eyeing Ashley the whole time. “And yet, you don’t talk to her?”
“Why is everyone so fixated on whether I speak to Megan or not? Madison mentioned ityesterday.”
Ashley couldn’t understand the sudden obsession. How did a girl she had known for two weeks play such a big part in her life? Did the others know somethingshe didn’t?
“I’ll say no more.” Jason made a zipping gesture across his mouth and threw away the key.
“Do you know something I don’t?”
“Nope.”
“Then why is everyone mentioning someone I went on twodates with?”
Jason rolled his eyes blatantly. “I think we both know it was a little more than justtwo dates.”
“That’s the reality ofit though.”
“Yes, it is, but I remember the week after she left you told me you couldn’t stop thinking about her. You told me there was a certain pull towards her that you couldn’t shake. I knew you were in trouble as soon as you said it.”
“That was twomonths ago.”
“Yes, but I’ll bet my life that it hasn’t changed.”
Ashley felt instantly uncomfortable. Jason stared so intently that she was conscious of her facial expressions and what theywould imply.
“So what if it hasn’t? It’s not like I can do anything about it.” Ashley shrugged. “That’s life.”
“Maybe notright now.”
Ashley felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. The caller ID showing a name she wasn’t expecting.
“What have you done?” Ashley flashed the phone in Jason’s direction.
“I didn’t do that.” He smiled. “The world works in mysterious ways.” Jason removed the now empty Cosmo from Ashley’s hand. “Answer it then, I’ll get you another one of these.”
She took a deep breath andhit accept.
“Hey.”
“Hi.” She made her way down the corridor and into the outdoor area. “One second, I can’t hear youvery well.”
“Where are you?”
“At Nancy’s actually.”
“I wish I could be there. I miss that place.” There was along pause.
“Did you needsomething?”
“Sorry, no, I don’t know why I called tobe honest.”
“Oh, what time is it there?”
