TWO DAYS BEFORE HER MAYwedding, while Violet was practicing the pianoforte in the parlor, Akers announced the arrival of Daphne and Thomas. “Mr. and Mrs. Hutchington,” he said.

Violet rushed to her friend and hugged her tightly. “You came!”

“Of course. How could I miss my dearest friend’s wedding?” Daphne said, hugging Violet back.

“Miss Bainbridge, may I extend my best wishes on your upcoming marriage?” Thomas said.

Violet stepped back from Daphne. “Thank you, Mr. Hutchington, for bringing Daphne to town.”

“It was my pleasure, although we’ll have to return home after the wedding breakfast.”

“I understand. Akers, could you please have a tea cart sent in?”

The butler nodded and left the parlor.

While they were enjoying tea and catching up, Alesbury arrived. Violet was thrilled to see him. “My darling, I didn’t expect to see you today.”

Alesbury went to the sofa and lifted her hand to his lips. “I couldn’t stay away,” he said, kissing her knuckles.

“Oh, where are my manners?” she exclaimed. “Lord Alesbury, may I present my dearest friends, Mr. and Mrs. Hutchington.”

Alesbury extended his hand to Thomas. “A pleasure to meet you.”

Thomas gave his hand a firm shake. “The pleasure is mine, my lord, although I feel like I know you already. Your betrothed has written to my wife of your courtship throughout the Season.”

Lord and Lady Edgerton strolled into the parlor soon after. “I thought I heard a carriage. Good to see you,” Edgerton said, extending his hand to Thomas.

“Edgerton, Lady Edgerton, good day to you both,” Thomas said.

Courtney went to Daphne. “It’s lovely to see you again. I’m so glad you were able to come to London for the wedding.”

“I wouldn’t miss it,” Daphne said.

Violet poured more tea while everyone caught up on the latest news.

Thirty minutes later, Mrs. Tyrell entered the parlor. “Shall I show you to your room, Mr. and Mrs. Hutchington?”

“Yes, that would be lovely,” Daphne said. “I would like to rest a bit before dinner.”

Violet watched as Daphne and Thomas followed Mrs. Tyrell up the stairs. “I’m so happy they could make it in time for the wedding.”

“Alesbury, may I have a word?” Edgerton said.

Alesbury nodded. “My dear, I’ll see you at dinner,” he said, kissing Violet’s cheek before following Edgerton to his study.

When the two men were ensconced in the study, Edgerton poured them each a brandy before they took a seat in the wing chairs in front of the fireplace.

“What’s going on?” Alesbury asked.

“I’ve been hearing rumors that the locals in Manchester are unhappy with the fact that only landowners are allowed to vote.”

“Oh? That’s the way it’s always been. Do you think there’s anything to the rumors?”

“I don’t know. I’m going to send Bishop up there to investigate.”

“Have you thought any more about recruiting Richmond?”

“Yes. Jeffries thinks it’s a good idea, although I’m not sure Richmond is inclined to agree. He’s still trying to figure out everything about running the dukedom.”
