A minute later, he chuckled, turning the screen to face me.

Preston: Did you set me up?

Hunter: Set you up?

Preston: Sending me to look at a house, knowing Alexis was the agent?

Hunter: That would be pretty ingenious.

Preston: Are you even interested in the house?

Hunter: Yes. I’m not a complete asshole. Tell her I want to put in an offer, assuming you think everything looks good.

Hunter: And you can thank me later for giving you both the nudge you needed. Be sure to name your firstborn after me as a token of appreciation.

I stared at Preston. “You didn’t tell him, did you?”

“No.” His eyes went wide. “Of course not. He was just teasing.”

“Okay.” My heart was racing. I was still getting used to the idea of being pregnant. I wasn’t ready to tell anyone. Besides, it was early in the pregnancy, and I was older now. I didn’t want to share the news for a while. “I’m not that far along, so we should probably wait to start telling people.”

“Of course.” Preston set his phone on the coffee table. “Whatever you want, beautiful.” He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “Though I can’t tell you how excited my mom is going to be.”

My face and ears felt incredibly hot, and I knew it wasn’t from the excess of hormones surging through my veins. “Your mom?”

I was trying not to care what other people thought about our relationship, but his mom was different. What if she thought I’d taken advantage of her son? What if—

“Yeah. I can’t wait for her to meet you. But,” he said, perhaps sensing my freak-out. “There will be time for that. No rush.”

“No rush?” I sputtered. “Preston, we’re kind of on a schedule.” I pointed at my still-flat stomach as if to underscore my point.

“I know.” His tone was calm, soothing. “But let’s just focus on enjoying this moment. I want to celebrate the fact that I’m going to be a father.” His eyes were watery. “I didn’t know if I’d ever get the chance to be a dad, and to have not one, but two kids…” He held a shaky hand to his mouth. “I can’t tell you how excited and proud I am.”

I’d always known Preston would be a good father, and I found myself getting more excited about our little one. I swiped at the corners of my eyes, overcome with emotion.

“Dang pregnancy hormones,” I joked.

“Well, if you need midnight ice cream runs or sex on demand…” He grinned. “I’m your guy.”

“Good to know. Now, come on.” I stood, needing to move before I did something crazy like have sex with him on the couch of a house I was supposed to be showing; that was more Lauren’s style. “Let’s tour the house, so you can report back to Hunter.”

He stood, taking my hand in his. “Lead on.”

“Typically…” I glanced at him over my shoulder as I led him up the stairs. “I don’t hold hands with a client.”

He chuckled. “Now that we’re together, you better never hold hands with a client. Though I do like the idea of being the boss in this situation.” He leaned in, his breath tickling my ear. “That you’re trying to please me,” he rasped.

His words, his touch, awoke a desire within me, a yearning for him I’d been trying to ignore.

“I always strive to ensure that my client is satisfied.” I grinned, pausing at the top of the stairs. “Here’s a bedroom that would be great as an office.”

The room had been staged as an office, and I leaned against the desk, admiring the view. Preston stalked over to me, placing his hands on the surface and trapping me in his arms.

“This desk is very…solid.” He pressed his hips against mine, letting me feel just how solid he was. He leaned down, nuzzling my ear. “You’re so sexy.”

“Preston.” I angled my head back, granting him access.

I’d missed him. God, how I’d missed him. The way he touched me, lighting up my body. The way he kissed, making me feel as if he’d captured my soul. The way he made love to me, making me feel as if we really were one person. Despite how much I was tempted to, we couldn’t… Not here.
