“I’m sorry if my answer causes you more pain. But I promised myself I’d be honest.”
“No.” I used the back of my sleeve to dab at my eyes. “I’m, uh… I was with someone for a long time. Well, a long time for me.” I laughed, though the sound was mirthless. “Until recently.”
“What happened?”
Was I really going to talk to him about Hunter? The idea was absurd, but it also made complete sense. I was still hurt by my father’s actions, and I wasn’t sure I’d ever fully get over it. But I needed to talk to someone, and the list of people I could discuss this with was short.
“He was keeping secrets—big ones. He was lying to me. And I suppose, I was lying too.”
“Can you forgive him?”
I stared at the wall, tracing the designs on the wallpaper with my eyes. “I don’t know.”
“You swore you’d never speak to me again,” he said with a wry grin. Though I could see the way it pained him. “Yet, here we are.”
“True.” I blew out a breath.
If I could talk to my dad after all these years, if I could find a way to move past what he’d done, maybe there was hope after all. I wasn’t sure I could ever fully trust Hunter, but maybe one day there would be a man I could trust. A man I would want to trust. And as much as I didn’t want to admit it, Hunter was partially to thank for that.
