Maybe whatever they already tried to tell me was such a shock, I passed out. But why did my body feel like death if it was just that?
“Okay,” I respond.
Nic hesitates a second then takes a deep breath before starting.
“Supernaturals exist, some of the species you’ve probably seen in television or movies are actually real. Although, obviously, Hollywood gets it wrong a lot.”
He gives me a second to digest that before continuing. Am I shocked to find out they’re real? Yes. But I guess it’s not so crazy to believe that these tales have some truth behind them. But does Nic know this for sure or is he saying he’s a believer? Oh no, are they in some weird believer cult and they want me to join?
“Do you have proof?” I ask slowly.
He nods, “yes, we have proof becauseweare supernatural. I’m a mage, so I could show you some magic right now if you want?”
I can feel my eyes grow huge at that. The idea ofthembeing supernatural is insane. I’ve never seen anything that would hint at that and we have spent a lot of time together. They would have slipped up and shown me something unexplainable. They could be insane and I just never realized, that seems more likely than this.
But, he asked me to hear them out so instead of voicing my doubt, I give him a chance to prove his sanity by nodding yes.
He conjures real fire in his hand, right in front of me. I can feel the heat coming off it and everything. My jaw drops and he lets out a little laugh. Holy shit, he is a mage. He must have used magic to heal me when I first woke up, that’s why I felt better so quickly.
I realize he said they were all supernatural but he didn’t say ‘we’ are mages, so what are the rest of them?
I peer around, expectantly, at each of them.
Kiran starts first, speaking so fast it’s almost hard to understand, “I’m a dark fae, which doesn’t mean I’m evil like lore may suggest, it just means I draw power from negative emotions.”
I nod, accepting that right away. Kiran is far from evil, he’s never shown me anything dark since I’ve known him. I give him a smile and he looks relieved that I believe him right away. Note to self, he is nervous about my reaction to him being a dark fae.
I move to Jax next, drawing a conclusion, “so you much be a dark fae too right? Since you’re twins.”
He appears uncomfortable but answers me anyways, “actually I’m alightfae and it’s incredibly rare that as twins, we aren’t the same species.”
I’m sure I’ll have more questions about that later but for now I’m just trying to take in the basics. I already feel like my brain is going to explode and I can sense they have a lot more to tell me.
I scan Jay and he shares, “I’m a wolf shifter.”
That’s one I’m more familiar with, it’s very popular in media and I’ve seen movies or read books with wolf shifters in them.
“You are? Can I see you shift one day?” I ask.
He perks up at that, “yes of course, my wolf is dying to meet you up close,” then he leans in conspiratorially, “I’m not the only one with an alternate form so you’ll have to see them shift for you too.”
I smile at that and give them all a sweet expression, which they respond to with a nod.
“Another time though,” Nic says and I agree because, again, I’m feeling like it’s already too much.
Lastly, I focus on Jeremy, wondering if he’s going to tell me. He looks uncertain and for once it seems like he’s nervous, not that he doesn’t want to.
Kiran nudges him and finally he blurts out, “demon, I’m a demon.”
I can’t help it, I burst out laughing and he looks shocked.
“Oh my god, of course! Is that why you’re so moody and broody all the time?” I ask.
He scowls at me and it’s then I realize I just insulted ademonwho clearly doesn’t like me. Shit, I don’t know anything about actual demons but that seems like a terrible idea. Instead of smiting me on the spot, he rolls his eyes and I remember that while Jeremy might not like me, he’s never hurt me. And I don’t think he ever would.
“Okay, so you’re supernatural. I believe you and I want to know more but this is pretty overwhelming. Can we stop for today and maybe I can learn more in smaller spurts?” I ask.
Their faces drop instantly and they all appear guilty.
