“I’m trapped here just like you but,” I decide to share more than I probably should. “I’m making moves to get out and I want to help all of you. When the time comes, I want you to be prepared.”
“What should we do?” The wolf shifter asks.
“Just stay alert and be aware of us,” Felix says.
One by one, they voice their agreement. As we stand there in that dimly lit room, a sense of camaraderie begins to form between us.
“I’m not sure that was the right move,” Felix whispers.
I grind my teeth. “It felt right. I know what it’s like to be them. They might be helpful at some point.”
He doesn’t fight me on it. “Okay.”
We are still stuck in the room when guards come back and cover the doors.
Felix starts panicking and pulls me aside. “Something is wrong. Anna is freaking out.”
A growl slips out. “We need to get out of here and back to them.”
Felix nods looking around the room.
I take a chance and go to the older wolf and cheetah. “I don’t want to test our new alliance too soon but we need to get out of here.” I decided to be honest since it’s something any shifter would understand. “Our mate is in danger and needs us.”
Their eyes widen before they nod. Both of them start shouting and demanding they be released. Others catch on and join in, making the guards step back from the doors so they can punish the people causing a scene.
I send them a silent thank you as Felix and I manage to slip out the door.
Squinting against the sudden brightness of the lights, I step into the warehouse, my heart pounding with a mix of relief and trepidation. The place is empty. Everyone is gone.
Felix sticks with me until we get out of there and far enough away to transport.
“We need to get to them. Now,” Felix demands.
I don’t waste words on agreement but just transport to them.
Twenty One
Anna
The night air is cold on my face as I crouch on the edge of the rooftop, looking down at the darkness below. My heart races with anticipation while Griffyn, Rion, and Aksel huddle close by, all of us trying to stay hidden from view. We’re waiting for the meeting to start.
“Sounds like they’re arriving,” Rion whispers, his Irish accent making the words sound melodic even in this tense situation. His green eyes flicker with unease as he scans the area below.
“Great,” Aksel’s voice is low and serious, his eyes narrowed as he listens intently.
I can hear footsteps now, the sound of people entering the building below us. So much depends on what we learn tonight. I shiver involuntarily.
“Meeting’s starting,” Aksel signals, and we all grow silent.
The device the Alpha Team has amplifies their voices for us to be able to hear clearly.
They start with small talk that blurs together until my thoughts completely turn to Blaze.
“Thinking about Blaze?” Griffyn teases quietly, making me blush. “You know, your influence over him is quite the miracle.”
I scoff at his words, not entirely convinced. “I do not have influence over him. He’s still going to do his own thing.”
“True,” Aksel chimes in, his deep voice cutting through the cold air. “But you managed to get him to apologize. In the past, he would never have done that. You’re changing him, Anna.”
