We get to the clubhouse door and walk in. Looking around, I see brothers at the bar, the pool table, and shooting the shit while relaxing. I walk over to the bar and one of the prospects, Cain, hands me a cold beer. I hear someone walk up next to me and I see it’s a brother I’ve known since I came to Ma and Pa’s.
“Samson, what’s happenin’, brother? Where’s—”
“Pres, don’t even try to remember her name. She’s long gone. She had more issues thanPeoplemagazine.”
“Man, yesterday I dropped off Dad to visit with Pa and I got to meet his rehab lady. Man, she’s a beaut.”
Spinning around to look Saxon in the eye, I say, “She’s hands-off, brother. She isn’t available for any of you.”
Saxon’s eyebrows go up sky high.
“Whoa, Pres, I didn’t do anything. I was just mentioning she’s pretty. Are you goin’ there?”
Juan moves next to me with a look of determination.
“We’re serious about her and she isn’t just a lay. If we have our way, it will be somethingveryserious.”
Samson has a sly look on his face.
“Is our pres, the man who doesn’t do the relationship thing, actually looking to get serious, and she’s goin’ along with it?”
Laughing and bumping Samson, Saxon surmises, “Wait, she’s not just falling into your laps all easy, is she? Good for her. She seems to be a quality woman. That’s something you have to work for.”
“We are and she’s already writing to Rory. They’re getting to know each other. She’s already got Pa and Ma on her side, and I’m sure when she meets the girls, they’ll love her. What about Chloe, Saxon? Haven’t seen her around in a while.” I was thankful for Juan and his redirecting the conversation.
“She’s got her kids again. Her ex hasn’t picked them up in weeks. I haven’t seen her in a while.”
“Is she someone who could mean something to you or are you just getting your dick wet?”
“I dunno, Pres. Part of me thinks she could be something serious, but we hardly get to spend any time together since she’s got her kids all the time. She doesn’t have family around and doesn’t look for a sitter, ever.”
Juan chimes in, “Good. If she’s a single mom who might mean something to you, you want her kids to come first. That means she’s a good mom and has her priorities in place. You need to decide if you’re man enough or ready to take that on. She won’t have tons of free time. Maybe you could get to know her and her kids. Bring them pizza and once they go to bed, you can spend some time with her. If you’re serious, you have to be the one to find the time and squeeze into her schedule. Her kids need her. You want her. That's the difference. Maybe bring her and the kids around if you’re serious. Have her get to know Anna, Ma, and the other old ladies, and let her see that we’re good people to have around.”
Whooping and cheering interrupts us over at the pool table as Shane, Jameson, and a hang around finish a game. We all head over in that direction and leave Saxon alone with his thoughts. We spend the rest of the night with the brothers, just having a good time before crashing in our rooms at the clubhouse.
Chapter 7
Rory
One thousand nine hundred and fifty hours left. I got a couple emails today—Ma letting me know she’s doing good and that Pa seems to be improving daily. She said Jane is really helping him and that he’s been looking at a Harley trike to get when she feels he’s ready to try riding again. Ma also was quick to tell me what a kind and generous person Jane is and that she’s always bringing Pa treats.
The other email was from Juan. He told me to not be shocked if Jane mentions that he told her we like to share. He also said that she doesn’t get how we could be interested in her. He also mentions her best friend Nicky, a guy who, it turns out, would rather try to get into his pants than hers. Hell, the guy writes like he texts, I swear.
“Weston! Mail.” Looking over, I see one of the guards who is not a complete ass at the front of the cell. He tosses me an envelope and I nod at him in thanks. Looking down at it, I see an address in town that I don’t recognize and realize it must be from Jane. I quickly open the envelope so I can see what she has to say. She intrigues me so much and I’ve only read one letter from her.
Dear Rory,
I’m glad to hear you’re alright with me writing you letters. You’re the second person I’m writing to now, the other being my dad. He’s doing his time a couple of hours from you. To answer your last question first, no, I do not have a husband or boyfriend or anything like that. I have a bestie and he has similar taste in men that I do. lol. I do have an ex-husband but we were married a very short time before I was 21. It’s been a very long time since there was anyone like that.
I was thankful to have your brothers help me get a new car this past weekend. I made them dinner in thanks, though to be honest, I don’t think they understood just how helpful they were. See, the Explorer I was replacing was the last thing my dad got me before he was sentenced, which means most likely. it’s the last thing he will ever give me like that. So their distraction was really appreciated.
I do have a question though, and you can tell me to mind my own business if you don’t want to go into it, but Juan said something that kind of threw me. I know he has a tendency to joke around so I’m not sure how to take it. He said he and Jon share women. Is this true, and do you do it as well? What made ya’ll decide you want to share in a relationship?
He also made a comment about being interested in me which I knew to take as joking. I mean, I’ve seen your picture at Ma and Pa’s and I know what they look like and how they seem to treat people. You all could have any woman you want. Again, feel free to tell me to shut up about that.
Your pa definitely does have a sweet tooth, but he and your ma are just so kind that working for them never feels like work. They make me realize how much I missed out on, not really having family since my dad is away and my mom and I don’t see eye to eye.
You asked about my mom, and that requires a bottle of wine on my part. Let’s just say she’s never been supportive or wanted me since before I was born. She named me Jane because she thought I was plain when I was born and didn’t think I would get any better. She has me saved in her phone as Plain Jane. She’s the mom who put me on my first diet at the age of seven and still thinks all these years later, I should go back to my ex-husband as no other man would want me. She usually only calls me when she wants something or if my brother has come to visit me. My brother is technically my half-brother. His dad married my mom when I was eight, and he never treated me badly. Even after he and my mom divorced, he included me in things. He passed away when I was eighteen. My brother Logan is awesome. We’re ten years apart. He’s in his last semester of college and is a whiz at math. My mom thinks he’s her golden child, but she drives him nuts. He comes here for most holidays and I secretly hope he moves here when he gets out of school. But like I said, anything deeper requires at least one if not more bottles of wine.
