“I hear ya. We’re going to work with the sheriff’s department in the town where Natalie recently moved. I’ll interview her today and get back to you.”

“I’ll stay tuned.”

He ended the call and set his phone on the desk. “Yes.” He dropped into his chair, and slapped the desk with zeal. “Yes!” He wanted more than anything to solve this case for Natalie. He’d been hoping for this kind of breakthrough for months.

It took Randy about an hour to download and print all the reports, photos, and case files. After bringing the captain up to date, the captain agreed it would be best for Randy to conduct his interview and take Natalie’s statement at the Chestnut Ridge sheriff’s department. The captain was able to quickly arrange that.

Randy headed to the mountains. Some things were better done in person. He needed to tell her about their progress, which he was dying to do. Asking the right questions and recording her responses to ensure he conducted his part of the investigation to the letter was key. He had to keep this part all business. He was so excited to tell her on a personal level too. It took all he had not to speed to Chestnut Ridge.

He stopped at the county sheriff’s office headquarters to discuss the details with the sheriff, then headed over to update Natalie.

When he got to the turnoff to the cabin, he pulled over and texted Natalie.

RANDY: Would you believe me if I said I was in the neighborhood?

NATALIE: Not likely, but if it was true, I’d say come on over.

RANDY: I was hoping you’d say that. Around the corner.

When he pulled up, Natalie stood on the bridge with her hands on her hips, wearing a big smile.

She stood on tiptoe and waved, then stuck her thumb out, pretending to hitchhike.

He pulled up alongside her and lowered his window. “Need a ride to town, lady?”

“You going my way?”

“Always.”

“What are you really doing here?”

“Had to talk to you.” He shut down the truck and got out. A beagle puppy came running from the bank, ears flying. “Who is this?”

“I have a new friend,” she announced. “More like family, probably.”

“You’re replacing me already? Man, that was fast.”

“Not likely.” Their eyes held.

He’d never noticed just how blue her eyes were until that moment. “Good.”

The pup started jumping and running between their legs.

“Don’t let him jump on you,” she said. “He’s been playing in the water.”

Randy squatted down to interact with the puppy. “What’d you name him?”

“I’m still working on that. We’re just getting to know each other. I got that little bundle of joy yesterday.”

“He’s a cute little guy.” He stood and let out a breath. “What’s that?” He peered over at the painting she’d finished.

“Oh. That. It’s a new set of designs for my note card collection.”

“It’s great. Wow, you’re really talented.”

She felt the blush rise in her cheeks. “Thank you.”

“No, really.”
