When her focus returns to my face, a cocky grin etches onto my mouth. Her eyes are sparked with lust. Realizing she’s been busted ogling me, her neck turns pink as her eyes rocket back to Travis. “I’m sorry about the mess.”
Her light blue eyes plead with Travis to accept her apology. He’s not as eager to accept her apology as I was. “Tell that to the boss.” He grabs ahold of her forearm and drags her toward Isaac’s office. When her panicked eyes stray to mine, wordlessly requesting my assistance, I shrug, acting coy.
I tried to help; you weren’t interested.
As if she can read my silent thoughts, her eyes narrow even more. Yep! She’s definitely a firecracker—ready to explode at any moment.
Against my better judgment, I shout, “She’s with me, Travis.”
The redhead standing frozen at my side releases a deep exhalation of air when Travis’s brisk strides halt a few feet away from us. “She’s with you?”
His tone relays he thinks I’m full of shit, but it doesn’t stop me from saying, “Yep!”
I stare into the relieved eyes of the pretty blonde, ensuring she knows how I want my restitution paid, only prying away my eyes when Travis asks, “What’s her name, then?”
Oh, fuck.
I’ve pulled this type of prank on Travis before, but it was with girls doing a runner before paying their bar tab. Those times, I was smart enough to ask Tina their names before rushing in to save them.
“Penny.” I thinkthat’s the name the blonde’s friend is whispering to me. “Her name is Penny.” I shout to project my voice over the thumping music.
With a sly grin, Travis glances down at Penny before holding his other hand out palm side up. “ID.”
Penny’s mouth forms an O while her hand digs into the little black purse under her arm. When she hands Travis what I assume is her driver’s license, her concerned eyes stray to mine.
“Jenni Murphy,” Travis reads off the license.
Fuck—I was close.
“Yep, that’s what I said.”
“You said ‘Penny.’” Travis’s voice is an angry roar.
“Nah, I said ‘Jenni.’ You just can’t hear properly over the music blaring out of the speakers . You must be going deaf. I said ‘Jenni.’”
I struggle not to laugh. It would be a lot easier to hold in my chuckles if Jenni wasn’t smirking at me. She has a beautiful smile, but her smug grin reveals her naughty side I’d give my left nut to explore further.
Travis’s furious gaze strays to the blonde now known as Jenni. “Are you with him?”
Looking up at him, she nods. My heart stops beating when Travis’s gaze flicks between Jenni and me for several heart-clutching seconds. I don’t know what he sees, but he loosens his grip on her arm not even five seconds later.
Jenni continues our deception by racing my way. My heart begins beating again when I spot her cheeky smile. After throwing her arm around my waist, we dart through the club’s double exit doors with her friend shadowing closely behind.
“Oh my god, Jenni, don’t you ever do that to me again!” her friend squeals when we hit the sidewalk.
Giggling, Jenni pulls away from me. “I’m sorry, Nicole.”
“Why are you laughing?” Panic is relayed in Nicole’s low tone. “You nearly had a meeting with a mob boss.”
My eyes bug. Isaac may be a little sneaky with his business dealings, but calling him a mob boss is a bit of an exaggeration. Somewhat agreeing with my silent thoughts, Jenni rolls her eyes before pacing toward a dark blue BMW parked at the back of Isaac’s club.
“You should be the one worried.” Jenni’s tone is more playful than snarky. “You wereillegallyin his club.”
I choke on my spit. Isaac would shit bricks if he knew he had underage girls in his club.
Nicole makes apfftnoise with her mouth. “Three months isn’t that far away.”
Like every girl I’ve ever known, their conversation veers in another direction without warning. “Did you see the guy Emily was dancing with? Oh my, he was smoking hot.”
