“You’re welcome.” I stopped walking just as we got to the chain-link fence of the bright tennis court, and took a step toward him.

Slate looked up at me with the lightest green eyes I’d ever seen. “Can I kiss you now?”

CHAPTER FIVE

Slate

“Yes,” I replied to Vaughn, not hesitating. I needed to know what it would feel like to have a man’s mouth on mine.

Needed to feel lips against mine for the first time in nine years.

Needed to feel what it was like to finally kiss someone I desired.

He took another step forward, and I retreated slightly, my back hitting the fence behind me. I swallowed, looking at his lips as he moved his head closer, and my eyes closed just as our mouths connected.

Vaughn’s calloused fingers cupped my cheek, and I moaned as his tongue parted the seam of my lips, our light beards rubbing together slightly. To me, this was my first kiss. A kiss that started off slow as we tasted each other, and then grew passionate as Vaughn cupped my other cheek and started to devour my mouth. He stepped forward again, his hard body touching mine, and I could feel his erection rubbing against mine, and I was about to melt into a puddle in the middle of June just by this man rubbing his dick on mine through our pants.

His lips started to trail down my throat, moving to the side of my neck, and I moaned. But suddenly, I became nervous again. What if he expected more than a kiss? “I’ve never done this before,” I blurted.

Vaughn pulled his head back. “What? Been with a guy? I thought—”

“Been with anyone,” I admitted. I wasn’t sure why, but I felt as though I needed to tell him.

“Really?”

I shrugged slightly. “You wouldn’t understand.”

He took a step back, so we were no longer touching. “Why do you say that? Because I’m in a band, on the road, and people assume we fuck anything that walks?”

I took a deep breath. “I think it would be easier in your world. Mine is hard given there have only been twoactivebaseball players come out.”

“And the others?”

“There have only been a few, and they came out after they retired.”

“So, are you waiting until you retire to live your life?”

“Iamliving my life.”

“What do you do when you’re not playing?”

I furrowed my brows. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t know anything about baseball, but I do know that you have to have time off. What do you do then?”

“Visit family, visit Leigh, hang with friends, and workout to keep my stamina up.”

“But never a boyfriend?”

“Never had one,” I reminded him.

“Why?”

I blinked. “I just told you—”

“There are plenty of men in secret relationships. Why haven’t you tried?”

I looked down at my feet. “Because I’ve never wanted to chance someone telling.”
