Inever realized how long ten days could be until I was spending my days and night without Slate.

Before him, I didn’t have that person who I talked to every night before bed, or who I couldn’t get out of my head. He was what I was looking for. Slate made me happy, and I wished that I could tell someone that we were together. I knew that his friend Leigh knew since she invited him to Sensation, and Ward and Kiera knew that I was spending my time at the club with one guy, but I wanted to tell the world.

As I was packing to head to Arizona for a few days, my cell buzzed with a group text from Kat with the band:Turn on “All Day Rock,” on satellite radio.

I walked into my living room and turned on my stereo. It was already on the station, and after the current song ended, my heart stopped as I heard our song, “Ghosts in the Flame,” filling the speakers.

“Holy shit!”

I dialed James. “Dude!”

“I know,” he boomed.

“How?”

“Kat worked her magic or something. Said she knew a guy who knew a guy and gave him a CD to listen to. He liked it and called her to tell her that he was going to play it today as a new find.”

“This is amazing!”

“Ghosts in the Flame,” had played on a few local LA stations but not all the time. Our entire album was on a few digital music services, but we hadn’t hit it big and hadn’t had a lot of exposure, but having it on satellite radio meant that we were going global.

“I gotta call Slate.”

“Who?” James questioned.

“I …”Fuck. “A friend of mine.”

“I know all your friends.”

“No, you don’t. I gotta go.”

I hung up before he could say anything else and then dialed Slate. He answered on the second ring. “Hey.”

“Where are you?”

“Driving to the field, why?”

I told him the satellite station number. “Hurry!”

“Okay, okay. Hold on. I have to take the phone out of Bluetooth. I need to pull over.”

“Fine, hang up and call me back. You only have about a minute more.”

I pressed the End button and paced around my living room as I listened to “Ghosts in the Flame.” When it was over, my phone started to ring with Slate’s name on the screen.

“See!” I boomed.

“That’s awesome, babe. Is it the first time one of your songs has been on the radio?”

“No, but this is like hitting the motherlode.”

“I’m proud of you guys. Before you know it, all of your songs will be on every station.”

I smiled. “Thanks. That means a lot to me.”

“It’s the truth.”

“We should celebrate tomorrow after your game.”
