FALLON
I arrived at my parents’luxurious two-story house on Cape Cod for their annual Fourth of July party. It had been a tradition in our family as far back as I could remember. My entire family came, and when I was younger, my siblings, cousins, and I would walk down to the water to watch fireworks and drink until we couldn’t think. I had made a lot of memories over the years, and I realized it could all change if my father was elected president in November.
As I stepped out of my blue Mustang Mach-E GT, the salty breeze of the Atlantic Ocean blew through my hair, and the sound of laughter and music drifted through the air. This year was special since my dad, a U.S. senator representing Massachusetts, had led the Democratic primaries and was expected to be confirmed as the party’s nominee at the Democratic National Convention the following month.
My gaze wandered over the meticulously manicured lawn and the vibrant splashes of red, white, and blue decorating every corner, reflecting the patriotic spirit. My parents had gone all out given the circumstances surrounding my father. If he were to become president, I wondered if our tradition would end, or maybe I or one of my siblings would have to take the reins for at least the next four years. My brother, my sister, and I were triplets, and if it came down to it, Faye would most likely host the party because she loved that shit. My brother, Finnegan, not so much.
Not bothering to go inside the house, I made my way around to where the party was held in the back and adjusted my sunglasses. It was a bright sunny day with no clouds in sight. That didn’t stop everyone from standing around, sipping drinks, and shooting the shit. Despite their attempt to blend in, I also spotted my father’s new security scattered throughout the property.
Before I could make a beeline for the bar, I noticed a striking man in a tailored suit, his demeanor exuding a sense of authority. While I’d never had a reason to speak to Agent Rhett Davis before, I knew who he was because the couple of times I had been in his presence, it had been hard to keep my eyes off of him. I couldn’t help but feel a tingle of curiosity race through my body as our stares briefly met through our shades.
“Mr. Donnelley.” He nodded curtly.
“Hey, there,” I said with a mischievous grin, sidling up to him. He hadn’t addressed me before, and because I thought he was easy on the eyes and I was in a flirtatious mood, I started a conversation. “If protecting my dad’s life is the task at hand, you’re doing a mighty fine job.”
Agent Davis glanced at me, his expression focused, and all I could do was stare at his perfect sultry lips.
“Thank you, sir,” he replied, his voice steady and unwavering. “My priority is ensuring the safety and security of your father and your family.”
Undeterred by his professionalism, I chuckled at his response. “Well, Agent Davis, I have to say, you’ve got dedication down to an art. However, I can’t help but wonder if there’s room for a little excitement amidst all the seriousness.” I knew I was taunting him, but I couldn’t help it. Did agents have fun? Whenever I saw them, they were alert and focused on their jobs, but I had to imagine each of them had a carefree side, and I wouldn’t mind spending time with Agent Davis when he wasn’t on duty.
His lips twitched ever so slightly, betraying a hint of amusement. “I’m afraid fun and games don’t fall within my duties. However, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of entertainment during the party.”
I leaned in closer, lowering my voice to a whisper. “You know, it’s a shame because I have a feeling we could have a good time.”
“I appreciate the sentiment, sir. But my commitment lies solely with my responsibilities. I’m confident you’ll find someone equally charming to show you a good time tonight.”
Was he flirting, or was that his way of letting me down easy? I couldn’t help but laugh, though, appreciating his unwavering dedication to his job. “You know, you’re absolutely right, Agent Davis. Safety first, I suppose.”
He nodded, his gaze shifting back to the crowd. “Enjoy the party, Mr. Donnelley.”
I sauntered away, feeling slightly rejected and ready for a cocktail. I knew there was no chance he would leave his post for a hookup. It was a far-fetched idea, especially since I wasn’t sure if he was even into guys, but I’d broken the ice and enjoyed the little banter we had shared.
After ordering a vodka soda at the open bar, I scanned the crowd for anyone I knew. While my extended family was always in attendance, I’d also invited a few friends.
I spotted Tyler and Hayden as they stood off to the side of the pool. I’d expected to see a camera wrapped around Hayden’s neck, but instead, it was Tyler’s arms as they laughed and kissed and enjoyed the party.
“What’s up, guys?” I asked as I approached. Tyler was my best friend, who I’d met in college, and Hayden was our professor he’d fallen in love with. It had been quite a shock when I’d found out, and even though they had broken up for a short period, they’d been back together for a little over a year and living together.
Without a response, Tyler lifted his left hand, showing a black band wrapped around his ring finger.
My mouth dropped open, and my eyes widened. “You’re engaged?”
Tyler looked at Hayden. Both had huge smiles on their faces.
“Hayden proposed this morning,” my best friend responded.
“Holy shit, guys. I’m super stoked for you two.” I wrapped them both in a giant hug.
“Thanks, Fallon,” Hayden replied.
We pulled apart, and Tyler said, “We don’t know when and where yet, but I was hoping you’d be my best man.”
“Absofuckinglutely. I’m going to plan the most epic bachelor party you’ve ever seen.” I had no clue what it would entail just yet, but I was determined to make it memorable.
“Nothing that will require me bailing you two out of jail, right?” Hayden grinned.
