I have my daughter
I sighed.
Right
But I miss you ?
I miss you too baby boy. I’ll find you and say hi ok?
Ok
When Leigh pulled up to the children’s museum where the breakfast was being held, I noticed another SUV like the one I was in ahead of us. It stopped, and we pulled up behind it. Was it my brother or sister? My parents were more than likely already inside because the event had started a couple hours ago. In order to accommodate everyone, breakfast was served across several time slots, and my mother insisted on being present for each one.
Once I got outside the vehicle, I looked over to see my brother step out of the other SUV. I walked to him, and we hugged.
“Know if Faye is here yet?” I asked him.
“Nope, but, uh”—he rubbed the back of his neck and eyed his security detail—“I need to talk to you.”
I blinked. “Okay?”
He nudged for me to follow him, and I glanced at Day, who was to be the man on the inside with me since Rhett was on leave. He nodded his head as though he understood to give me a moment with my brother, and I followed Finn to a spot several yards away.
He lowered his voice. “I need to borrow some money.”
“What?” I snorted. “You have money.”
Our parents paid for our housing, all utilities, and any other living expenses. They also took care of our schooling, but Finn and my sister had finished college and weren’t pursuing anything beyond their bachelor degrees like I was. In the almost two years since Finn had graduated, he had yet to get a job. It didn’t bother me that he lived off our parents, but why was he asking me for money? They gave us extra cash each month for anything additional we wanted, so what the hell was he spending his on?
“I spent it.”
I chuckled. “On what? Hookers?”
“No.”
“Blow?”
“No,” he clipped. “Just, can I get a grand, and I’ll pay you back next month?”
“A grand?” I balked. “Why the hell do you need so much?”
“Just”—he threw his hands in the air—“forget it. I shouldn’t have asked you.”
He stormed past me, and I turned to tell him to wait, but my eyes collided with the baby blues I wanted to get lost in. Rhett was standing with a little girl next to the other Secret Service agents on my detail.
“Everything okay, sir?” Day asked.
“It is. Thanks.” I bent down to Rhett’s daughter’s height. “And who do we have here?”
The three-year-old moved behind Rhett as he said, “Mr. Donnelley, this is my daughter, Poppy. Poppy, this is Fallon, the man I work for.”
“The one you keep safe?” She peeked around him.
“Yeah, sweet pea.”
Among other things.
“It’s so good to meet you, Poppy. How about we go inside? I heard Santa has hot chocolate.”
