The day was dragging, and all I wanted to do was get home to be with Coop. Things were about to get crazy, with the Finals starting soon, so our time together would be limited. The Finals were played as a best out of seven game series. The first two games would be played in Las Vegas, then the team would come home for the following two games. If additional games were needed to determine the winner, they would alternate cities for each one.

I was counting down the hours until I could leave the office when my cell rang. The District Attorney’s office number popped up on the screen, and I answered. “Hello?”

“Yes, is this Ford Mahoney?”

“It is,” I confirmed.

“This is Rebecca from the DA’s office. Henry Williams, the Assistant District Attorney, would like to meet with you tomorrow to discuss the plea bargain that will be offered in the case against Timothy Smith.”

It felt as though the investigation had taken forever, but I’d recently been informed that the DA had enough evidence to take the case to trial. And even though I was ready for things to move forward, my stomach still churned at the thought of dealing with more Tim stuff.

“Okay. What time does he want me to come in?”

“He is available at eleven or five.”

“Eleven will work for me.” I wanted to get the appointment over with as soon as possible.

“Very good. We’ll see you then. Enjoy the rest of your day.”

“You too. Bye.”

Later, when I got home, Coop was lying on the couch watching TV. “Hey, baby. How was your day at work?”

I left my laptop bag by the front door and walked over to him, kissing him softly before dropping onto the couch next to him. “Boring until I got a phone call from the DA’s office.”

He sat up. “What’d they have to say?”

“It sounds like they’ve come up with the plea deal they’re going to offer Tim, and they want to discuss it with me beforehand. I’m going to the office at eleven tomorrow.”

“Do you want me to go with you?”

I shook my head. “You need to focus on your upcoming games.”

“Yeah, but if you need me, I’ll be there.”

My boyfriend really was the best. “I know you would, but I’ll be fine.”

“Will you call me after?”

“Of course. Now, let’s eat. We both have a lot going on the next few days.”

The anxietyof walking into the DA’s office caused my pulse to race.

“Hello. How can I help you?” the receptionist asked as I approached her desk.

“Hi. My name’s Ford Mahoney, and I have an eleven o’clock appointment with ADA Williams.”

“Okay. I’ll let him know you’re here. You can have a seat over there while you wait.” She pointed toward a group of chairs in the corner.

There wasn’t much to do while I waited, so I pulled out my phone to text Coop.

I’m at the DA’s office waiting for my meeting. What are you up to?

We’ve been watching some game footage this morning. Now I’m getting ready for lunch with the team

You still want me to call you when I’m done? I don’t want to interrupt anything

You better call me. I want to know what’s going on
